Head and Engine Identification

Hi Guys

I'm having a 1500 engine fixed up. I have a number of engines sitting around so was just getting the best bits from each. Some questions are getting raised:

Are the heads on single carb engines the same as dual carb? I'd heard they were different but don't know what that might be?

I also have some heads that are quite different pics attached. These other heads don't seem to have any depressions - high compression heads?

Finally, I thought I'd check what the original engine was. Found it has engine code AR30588. That's not on the list! Anyone know what that means?

Ive got one of those aswell. Yes the SC heads are different to Veloce heads. If if I remember a 30588 code is a carbed 33 1.5 (102hp). I think it’s Basically a 1.5 bore and stroke but with 1.7 chambered heads valves are bigger too.
Btw. if your selling the flat heads I may be interested. Or may Swap for. 1.7 bottom end ?

Single carb heads are different, I can’t remember how exactly. But if your heads have twin carb manifolds then they are twin carb as the manifolds don’t fit a single carb head.

The flat heads are the earlier sud heads, the chambered / domed heads came with later 33’s. The pistons are different for each head, with the flat heads the pistons are dished instead, for the chambered heads the pistons are not dished.

See pics ere of the dished pistons. You will need to use the heads that match the pistons on your block, and if std you won’t see and difference in performance between the 2 different combinations.

The main difference between the SC and Veloce (twin carb) heads is the port centres . If you sat a Veloce manifold on a SC head the ports are a clog out the chambered heads you’ve got appear to be the later veloce heads . as they have enough meat to allow machining of the little cut outs used with the injected 8v engines. That’s why you have the injected gaskets between the head and manifold.

As far as I can tell you have a 1.5 twin carb head and a 1.7 "chambered head". Looking at the inlet ports it looks like only the old gaskets have the cut out for the injectors. The inlet ports dont seem to have these injector cut outs? If so they look like mechanical heads rather than hydraulic from this side. If these heads have the same cam boxes as the 1.5 heads then youv hit gold...

Just reading this and had a thought, so gone to look for the engine code for mine and can not spot it . Where on the engine is it ? Thought i had noted it, but of course that will only turn up once I have found it out again. Thanks.

Engine code is on the RH side of the block just around the dipstick area.

Just a tip - give it a quick rub with some emery paper,draw on it with some chalk then wipe with a finger. Hopefully you should then be able to read it.

regarding your Nov 28 post.......how far is a "clog out" in the metric system?

KevJTD: that's the list I have seen before but 305.88 isn't on it!
Lou: Carbed 33 sounds right, I'll check with my guy on whether the valves are bigger.

I think I'm going to end up with a franken-boxer that mixes bits from a range of engines - I have some fairly radical cams that they are trying to use but we're all really keen that nothing hits anything else when it's running!

Strange, wonder if there are codes for engines that went into the 145/6?

Alfa 145 / 146 1596cc 8v boxer engines are AR332.01, the1712cc 16v engines are AR334.01.

Just found a reference to the 305.88 engine number that ‘ alfettagtm’ was asking about.

Apparently it’s a twin carb (dellorto drla36) 1.5 Alfa 33. I found it listed in the carburettors section of the ‘complete car’ part of the 33 workshop supplement (October 1988 - page 29).

Not sure if that helps.....better late than never....maybe.

Sorry, my mistake, that engine is listed with with dellorto 40’s or Weber 40’s.

Now a thread resurrection.

The block I have is a 30736 which is 1.7 8v ie - is this the same as the 1.7 carb version and are 16v pistons compatible.
