Got the engine & Gearbox out of the Sud

Post by dave.armstrong »

Well, I finally get time to make a post.

The Sud MOT was coming up and knew that I was getting some fluid of some sort on the front brakes.

It is now 7 years since I got the Sud on the road and hence 7 years since I restored the front calipers.

Also, the gearbox and engine seemed to be getting minor oil leaks and it doesnt take much oil to get to the front discs on an inboard Sud does it!

So i have decided to take it off the road for few weeks.

New calipers, handbrake cable, clutch (it is still on the original) front engine mount, some hoses, Goodridge hoses, Gearbox gaskets & seals etc etc.

It seemed easier to take the engine out than and enjoy it rather struggle and not enjoy it.

Question for everyone.

When the Sud is cold I can beat the syncromesh on second. The rest of the gerabox is great

I have seen posts on some other forums (trash) about swapping the sychro rings from 5th & 6th (had it been fitted) to 1st & 2nd.

The gearbox is out. I can't do it. Need special tools, don't know how to etc etc but has anyone on the forum ever done it and if so how long would it take?

Is it worth contacting an Alfa specialist to do it whilst it is on the floor?

I have got some Castrol Syntrans fully synthetic oil to put in when it, it is back in service and a lot of people say that this may help.

What are your views?

Hi Dave.

7 years, really

I can still remember following yours for the enthusiasm I needed to finish mine!

For the gearbox I always let Tom & Phil at BLS do mine. There are tools and experience needed to strip the 'box, I have neither.

They've done 3 now for me and all have behaved perfectly afterwards, Lauren even has one of my old rebuilt ones in the green machine.

Worth paying the experts on that one mate ;)

But I should have tried more

Hi Dave

i too have heard/read that about using other high gear synchro rings, but like you have only got it as hearsay so far, i don't know anyone that has actually done it.

i know that when talking to Tom and Phil as Kev mentions before, Tom has said on more than one occasion how 2nd gear synchros are no longer available so they have to build from what they still have in spares, pretty sure thats what he said, but i've never heard him talk of using something else instead.

I'm probably due for a chat with them soon anyway Dave, would you like me to ask on the subject?

cheers

Hi Dave

hopefully, you're in luck (actually, we all are!)

i spoke with Tom, bls, earlier tonight, and he confirmed that yes, the baulk rings from taller gears can. and indeed are, used as synchro repairs for troublesome 2nd gear etc throughout a typical used gearbox rebuild.

i hope this helps Dave
