I am using a sud engine and gearbox with inboard brakes on my kit car. The car is mid engine so what were the front brakes are now the rear brakes.
On two occasions, the seals have leaked on the calipers. replacements fitted twice
I'm using DOT5 brake fluid
I am using independant master cylinders for front and rear brakes.
Does anyone know what is the maximum pressure that can be exerted on the calipers. I'm wondering if the single master cylinder is too powerful.
Alternatively what is the bore diameter and stroke of a standard sud master cylinder
Thank you
Sud inboard brakes - brake pressure

Bit of a hard question!
Try asking someone at a brake specialist like Bigg Red for example

Hi Zeds - now there's an interesting question! I have the same arrangement as you, mid-engine with Alfasud inboard brakes. I don't think brake pressure is the issue - as rear brakes they have quite an easy life, frankly. I am using a front/rear split circuit system with AP Racing 0.6" bore master cylinders and a bias bar. I've dialled in a little over 50% of the bias to the rear brakes.
I have had problems with fluid leaks from my calipers, but only after they were refurbished (badly) by BCS. The leaks were all from mangled bleed screws. BCS ruined 3 perfectly good calipers in the same way. In the end I cut my losses and refurbished a pair myself. No leaks so far!
Can you see where the leaks are coming from? Various parts of the handbrake mechanism can leak, also around the outer adjuster O rings for example. If the leak is coming from one or both pistons the bores could be corroded perhaps?
Perhaps a bit off the wall, but is the contamination of the brakes definitely brake fluid? I have had trouble with the gearbox half-shaft oil seals in the past, which can quickly contaminate the brake pads. Gearbox oil is a lot thicker than brake fluid though!
Good luck with fixing the fault - what kit car have you got, as a matter of interest? Please don't say its a Raffo Tipo 12, I will be sooooo jealous!

Just a thought, I’m probably way off base here but are the sud calipers compatible with DOT5? Would you be better off with DOT4/5.1?

Mine have been fine with DOT 5NEG wrote:Just a thought, I’m probably way off base here but are the sud calipers compatible with DOT5? Would you be better off with DOT4/5.1?
