33 SPORTWAGON, 16V CLOVERLEAF

Post by PETROLHEAD »

I'm afraid is time chaps and chappettes, i cant do this car justice, and i don't want it to do another winter out in the cold :|

Some of you will know the car already, and what little work it needs in reality to be something quite special and very very rare, but go it must, so here is the link to an ebay advert for all you snipers and bidders!

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/234173727530

and also a walk around video on you tube

Here is the last of my Alfa 33's up for grabs, and a very reluctant sale it is too, but sadly time, health, work commitments, allsorts of factors are not on my side at the moment, and i'm not doing the car justice just sitting on it, so it should be taken on by someone else really.

When this was last mot's a few years ago, it made it one of just three cars of this type on the road in the UK, making it the rarest of the boxer engined Alfa Romeo cars today, a very very sought after and appreciating classic.

I'm going to make it clear from the outset, this is a car that needs a couple of area's welding on the underside, namely the usual weakness for 33's, the jacking points are tired, one already having been dealt with previously but not very well. I have other photo's of the exact poor area's, aswell as more showing how solid the remainder of the floor still is, so hopefully you can appreciate why i bought this as a pretty straight forward rolling restoration. Just ask and i can send you the photos, and i have also done this video clip walk around to show that she is still a running driving car, all be it without mot of course.

As you can tell from the photo's and video clip, topside bodywork really pretty good and straight. The wheelarches and wings etc are super solid, as are all the major panels actually, but some blebs and scabs are starting, but catchable, on one or two of the door bottom outer skins, and the windscreen surround which has leaked in the past hence the temporary tape to that corner, and discolouration of the roof lining immediately underneath it.

The rear tailgate is weak around the offside rear corner, but i have another tailgate which whilst not perfect, is in much better shape than this one, and even in the right colour!

The fuel filler area is still good and solid, only a tiny surfaceb blemish there, which is unusual for all series 33's, so along with the excellent wheelarches, i think there is evidence that these were regularly cleaned out by matter of routine, and that has preserved these area's very well.

Same goes for the spare wheel well, the rear valance panel, the front firewall, inner wing rails, bulkhead etc, these usual weakness are very good indeed, and should not need anything for mot, but some cleaning and recommissioning of underseal etc would be a good idea after being stood for sometime now.

And i guess to perfect the car, paintwork top side will be needed, but its good and smart enough to do a running restoration on it no problem. Maybe not the pride of the car park on National Alfa day as she stands, but potentially the only one there anyway!!!

She starts, runs and drives under her own steam no problem at all, with the exception of needing a fresh battery, but with my boost pack she fired up straight away and soon settled to her familiar burbling idle, i do love these boxer engines!

The clock shows 85500 miles on her, and with the amount of receipts and mot's i have, i see no reason to doubt that. It may not be the freshest motor, but burns no oil, no smoke or smells, but not the quietist either. It must have decent compression to start so easily and no smoke, but it was always my intention to rebuild or at least refresh the motor at some point anyway. I like to modify and tune my stuff, so its always nice to know you're at least starting with a fresh motor rather that tuning in some problems down the line.

To that end, i also have a complete spare 1712cc 16valve engine, and maybe a few more bits if i can find them, but i've been into Suds, Sprints and 33's for years now, so have accumulated a fair few bits along the way. Anything else i can find specifically 33 related, you are welcome to take along with the car. That may be not be an awful lot, but i will look and see what i have as this is probably my last 33 so no point me keeping anything for them.

The only other mechanical issue that i know of will be another typical weakness of these cars, and that is 2nd gear synchro is tired. You can drive around it, take your time changing gear and you'd never know, but get involved in a traffic light grand prix and she'll go in gear every time, just not silently, not a slick change.

i think i have a 33 P4 gearbox somewhere which shares the same internals with the added rear drive output, but this could prove a good source of spares, and can be included, once i find it!

The car is already sat on a, what was, a brand set of H & R sport springs. I bought them a couple of years back to improve the ride and stance of the car. They are a quality, progressive wound, uprated spring, approximately 30% stiffer and 30mm lower, and i'd say thats about right based upon my 33 experience.

Also bought at the same time from a trackday friend, a set of OZ Superleggarra 17" alloys (Super Light Weight). Good straight wheels, but poor tires, after standing etc, one leaks flat in about a fortnight.

I appreciate that these larger sizes and straight spoked wheels might not be everyone's cup of tea, and i had initially intended to advertise the car with a more period styled 15" set of wheels, which i would also have better condition tyres for too, so if you prefer, i can swap the wheels over in time for it being collected.

And i think that's about it folks, i can't think of much more to waffle on about, but i have tried to show it, and tell it, as honestly as i can.

If anyone wants to inspect the car prior to bidding, they can do, and i will put it on four ramps so you can get right underneath it to see it for yourself.

If thats an impossibility due to logistics, then as i mentioned early on, i do have photo's of the good the bad and ugly of the cars underside, warts and all, and if you message me i can forward these on, or whatsapp' etc ? (O7875749472)

Clearly without mot the car will need trailering or transporting away, and is located at my workshop in Carlton on Trent, just yards from the main A1 so very very easy to get too. This is close to Newark, Nottinghamshire, but out in the sticks a little
