Sud Green Cloverleaf S3, Its better than it looks!

Post by PETROLHEAD »

Hi all

some of you may have seen this little beauty advertised, some may have pretty much ignored it due to a terrible first impression, but i gave it the benefit of the doubt, and bought the poor little thing!

advertised as a pukka Series 3 Ti green cloverleaf, the serial numbers check out as just that (thanks kev :D ), and believe it or not, in the flesh its actually a pretty good shell, particularly in the structural area's that can be a real pain in the butt.

For the purpose of transport and benefit of the potential next owner, it is now a rolling and steering shell, and can be moved around freely.

A lot of work has already been carried out, including 80/90% of the up front inner wings, chassis rails, wing rails, strut area's etc have had a good bit of seam welding, even where it appeared unnecessary, maybe there was once track plans? A few relatively minor patches still require attention, but ts a solid front end.

Door pillars are solid. windscreen surround has had some solid repairs already, roof good, rear quarters good and has an arch repair already, outer and inner sills are good and solid. front and back panel appear good too although need a bit of straightening by the looks of them.

Its the main cabin floor that remains the issue, but as anyone who has carried out this sort of work before, a large plain shaped panel such as the sud floor is about as easy as it gets!

All driver and passenger floor pieces need reinstating, but under the rear seat and boot floor etc are all in good solid fettle. With the floor done, and the joint to the inner cabin sill section, there is little else to weld up with the exception of the afore mentioned patches up front, the sill end junctions in the rear arches, bit of reinforcing to the bulkhead battery.

There is more seam welding to the rear suspension turrets and surrounding area's, both inside and out!

I am told by the vendor it is a proper green cloverleaf, and we all know how the prices are going currently, i am awaiting the V5 which is being sent on once he returns to Blighty having worked away briefly.

Please don't be put off too much by the photo's, as Kev can confirm, it is actually a better starting point than first impressions would suggest.

The outer panels, such as wings, doors, bonnet, original hatchback etc, are all available to buy from the previous owner i'm told, and can be negotiated for directly.

I bought the shell to save it, but no doubt about it, i need to find a home for it pretty quickly as i'm out of dry storage area's and clearly as it is it's not going to do it any favours out in the english summer! lol!

Even taking a day out of work, fuel for a fair distance, and the actual purchase price, it doesn't stand me at an awful lot, so the first reasonable offer that covers that expense, buys it.

I've tried to take photo's of every area possible, but please feel free to come and see it for yourself, and we'll have a natter of a cuppa! :)

A track-day car rather than an original resto' Shrew are you thinking. Unless someone has a shed full of parts?

I'm not sure Tony, i think maybe someone at some point may have thought about preparing it for the track, hence the seam welding, but it's not beyond the point of no return in any direction really, and could still be the basis of a really solid road car.

It's just no good sitting outside at the end of a long que at my place, so its gotta go one way or the other.

As for the parts, well a lot of the original body parts are still with the previous owner, and available to buy too, but series 3 parts are plentiful up at Johns gaff anyway, he'd sort a kit out in no time! ;)

Yeah I'm wondering if i did right myself now Pat.

Its an easily saved shell, but like you i dont have dry storage for it long term.

Maybe it'll end up on the heap afterall! :(

Well done for rescuing it Shrew. I'm sure someone will surface that wants it.

Stick it under a tarpaulin , let's face it, it's got good under floor ventilation so won't suffer too badly :D
