Hi Ian,
Really enjoyed the wet race. Had to steer well clear of the Saxo on a couple of occasions. Malcolm had a rear view video shot of me on the grass a couple of times to avoid swopping paint.

The red team has a new weapon as of this afternoon:

I know its german but its a 1982 classic.

Hi Keith,

It seems a good honest car. I will need to check out the roll cage, new seat, new belts, fit a fire extinguisher, catch tank, new discs & pads, new tyres - slap some numbers on the side and were off.
If its not fast enough (I am told the engine is 148hp), then a 180hp engine is realistic from the 1.8l engine.

All the best,
Simon

Oh Tim, you've turned it into a team battle! We'll have gatling guns and spikes protuding from the wheels at Snetterton :!:
Brands results are here; http://www.tsl-timing.com/file/?f=BARC/ ... 02183t.pdf
and here is a link to my in car footage (Just to confuse everyone, I was in the SC for Brands). Glad we had the video out the back as I didn't see any of the excitement behind! (I firmly believe that if you don't look then it isn't there) :D

Really enjoyed the weekend, thanks Ian, Tim and Simon.

I'm sure there is an innappropriate joke above somewhere regarding German, Italian, invading etc ......!

I almost packed up and went home on Sunday, the rain in the morning was awful - however pleased I stayed and went out, opting to start at the back (wimp!) as I dont like rain, and didnt like the Puma drivers! - I need some of Malcolms courage, and need to remind myself I have top adjustable shocks hence could have softened them up a bit!

Great weekend overall, me and Ian crossed the line 2 tenths of a second apart in race 1 so a nice sight for Sud lovers - one more lap and he would have passed me !

Malcolm, you are certainly not fazed by the rain. Cracking start.
I have to ask, which of the two cars do you prefer as you seem at home in both.
Cheers,
Keith

Just seen Simon's post for sale so that answers the question.

Hi Keith
If I am totally honest I prefer driving the Sprint.
The Sprint was set up by Adie Hawkins and it gives you levels of confidence we currently don't get out of the SC.
We will get there with the SC but there are a lot of suspension changes to be made/tested.
Also the inboard brakes on the SC are not up to much so a late lunge up the inside is only something to be tried in the Sprint.

Analysing a bit more, both Simon and myself grew up on Suds and although we are very fond of Sud Sprints I guess you always remember your first
I hope whoever buys the Sprint will come and race with us in the CTCRC as it is a lot of fun!

All the best,
Malcolm

Hi Ian,

Well, I had been looking at this Golf GTI MK1 for some time. I saw that the ad had been viewed 10,500 times so thought i should pull my finger out and look at it.
Its a little beauty. Not as pretty as a Sud and doesn't have as much character. It has a Mk1 GTI 1781cc engine with 1mm overbore (1.6mm allowed) and original K-Jet fuel injection so will go into Class C of the pre83's.
Seems to be nicely set up with coilovers, big brakes and a tuned engine that is supposedly 155bhp. Nice body and it was cheap!

Oh, I forgot to mention - five bearing crank as standard so you can rev it.

Lets see how it goes.

All the best,
Simon

Hi Simon,I,m sure its a nice example but its a Golf,a VW & from 1980 as an apprentice mechanic at Thompson & Taylors in Cobham I was taught that VW & BMW were the enemy.I have carried this through life with great joy cheering at every opportunity when a BMW touring car hit the wall or broke down or was just crap!!As for Golfs well they never made very good Touring cars but I spent many years hunting them down on the road in Suds, great times great fun.
I hope it makes a good race car for you,are you planning to race it this year?if you are the Sud & I will look forward to that! :)
All the best
Ian.

Glad it's not just me that dislikes the VW's with a passion Ian :D
Although my distaste is usually reserved for the modern VW/Audi bunch, apart from T2 campervans...they have a special catagory
Giulietta JTD 170
Lancia Delta integrale
Lancia Flavia coupe 1.8 1963
Lancia Dedra turbo
Renault Clio 197 RS

I'm bad with people things
But I should have tried more

Ah, so this is where you're hiding.......;)

I'll confess to having owned a Mk2 Golf GTi.....it was a good car, really - no character, but tough and dependable, once I'd got over the initial corroded fusebox issue........

Anyway, good to see the Sud's performance at Brands, sorry I couldn't get down there, and of course the official AROC Van and presence was at Silverstone Classic weekend..........its the old clashing events issue.

Anyway, just to let you know, if the MSA come up with my licence in time, I should be making my re-appearance on track for the first time in nearly five years at Mallory (CSCC) this weekend, in the ex-Dave Messenger 75 V6 with my mate Steve Jay, who I've raliied and raced with for about 40 years........

If anyone has any spare wire wool please send it to Mallory - I may be a bit rusty!

Best thing VW make is the transporter van cos that tows the Sud & 164  Can't believe you had a corroded part on a VW surely not!!
As for the ex Dave Messenger 75 have you checked & tried the brakes cos they were a bit crap the last time it raced at Mallory!! :(
Good luck if you get out to race.

Hi Guys,

I guess I am asking for it, putting a german car up on this forum - whoops.
Got a feeling that this car is going to give you a whooping on the track Ian. 8-) Maybe not straight away with 155bhp, but you can get a 170bhp, 1848cc engine to stay in class C or if you go to class X you can drop a 240hp, 2000cc engine in.

Should be ready for Snetterton.

Brgds,
Simon

Hi Simon, yes I think coming on an Alfa Forum with Golf was bound to get some flack :) But I like what you have challenged me with. What I would say is that it would be very unsporting to come out with a 270 bhp engine as that would be exactly twice as much bhp as my Sud! So how about you stick to the 155 bhp engine(still 20 bhp more than mine) & the Sud & I will be at Snett & Thruxton (both power circuits) for the challenge.
All the best
Ian.

Oddly enough it is the area that we've probably spent most time on - new larger master cylinder, all re-piped, new pads etc....but when we tested it briefly on a private car park last week one wheel (OSF) kept locking.....going to have another go at it tomorrow..........Last car we raced was a Porsche 944 Turbo which had epic brakes....so it does concern me a bit......

Not sure about getting out with CTCRC - for one thing we'd be with the pre-93s, not with you guys.......and for another its my mate's car, and we've always shared drives in CSCC 40 minute two-driver races.......I actually prefer the one-day format, too.

First things first, though - let's see if I can still drive after a near 5-year break from the track ;)

OK Ian. If you win at Snetterton I will give you a bottle of wine that was served on Concorde in its last week in service in 2003.

Hi Ian,

Just a thought. Our 1588cc SC is about 157bhp. Your 1.7 16V on carbs is probably 170bhp. Come on - show us your dyno plot. Its much faster in a straight line than our SC.
I will get a dyno plot for the Golf and put it on the forum.

All the best,
Simon

Hi Simon, thats a strange reward for winning :) how about just a nice bottle of red? as for my engine its an 8 valve 1.7 on 40mm carbs its got one Dave Thomas head & one AHM head.I think the Block is AHM but the crank was done by Power For Peanuts. Its never been on a rolling road, well thats not completely true in 2008 when it was a complete AHM engine in a class D 33 (ARCA) it produced 143 bhp at flywheel. The crank went in the next race at Snett hence all the different bits.If my engine was quicker than your SC then it would have been at Silverstone when you were having problems cos I,ve seen the Brands video & that is one quick Sud you,ve got.I don,t know what bhp Tim's Sprints got but I was ahead of him coming out of Clearways in the first race & he crossed the line 2 tenths ahead of me.I reckon my engine has got 135 bhp & I rev it to 7200.
Cheers Speak soon

I can vouch for Ian's bhp, I've got 2 similar spec 1700 8v engines (old Alfa class D) in storage. On the rollers I use these engines showed 130bhp (another set of rollers showed 143bhp but I'd say that was very optimistic).

My 1500 shows 140bhp on the same rollers as the 130bhp 1700, with the same drag as the ones Simon uses.

Ian's lap times comes from his ability to put his sud around corners so accurately and quickly. Something I'm not as good at... :(

Hi Guys,
I am under no illusions that Ian is a long standing and very good driver. Its very cocky for me to challenge him as I did my ARDS in 2014 and he was 3 seconds a lap faster than me in the dry at Brands - but its fun as well and I will gladly give the old warrior a nice bottle of wine. I know that I am going to need a great handling car and just as much engine power as possible. In the garage tonight removing the thick black sound deadening tar from the golf floor - every KG counts! :D
If you can't beat him with superior driving, get a faster car!

All the best,
Simon

If you haven't binned the under seal Simon, might be worth weighing it. I'm sure somone once told me that they scraped off 15kg of it.....I could be imagining that.

I would have thought you ought to be able to get the golf down to low 800kg, which will make it go well.
