New front brakes for 2015

Post by BS25 »

When I did posted the 2014 season summary I mentioned that at some circuits (mainly at the end of some straights!) the front brakes on our 33 were a bit marginal. The previous set up used 164 Twin-Spark discs with Alcon 4-pot racing calipers - this served has served us well but with a lot more power from the 16v engine it was time for an upgrade. We run 15" wheels so the new brakes had to fit within but we have managed to maximize the space available to us!

Our old set up have found their way into good hands so I'm glad that they will continue to see life on an Alfasud! Here's a few photos of the new brakes:-

Thanks for sharing details of your brake setup Bryan.
Would you use any cooling? You may not need it.
We bought some little plastic scoops from minimania that tywrap to the lower wishbone on each side and a short run of orange silicone duct hose. My brother has history of cooking the brakes and he didnt manage to cook these.
We are also impressed with AP Racing R4 brake fluid with a boiling point of 340deg!

All the best,
Simon

As per usual, the photos tell most of the tale, but not all.

Having seen, even examined, the new set up in the flesh, the thing you can't see is Toms usual approach to the project.

Everything is exacting, simplified and straight forward to the best possible degree, and executed beautifully! :)

and of course, yes, the owner of the Alcons (Me!) will put them to very good use indeed, they won't be under a fraction of the stress that Bryan and the 33 put them under, but as a modified street car, they're gonna be awesome! :D

Hi Simon,

They probably won't need any specific ducting - there is plenty of airflow and the wheels are open compared to most so they should be okay. If required we can duct from the front bumper, as it's non-standard we have airflow holes each side that we can duct from.

We've used AP Racing fluid for a long time but have switched our allegiance to another of the Joe Gibbs products.

Shrew - they will be excellent on your Sud - more than plenty! :)

Looks great

I'm sure you will all think I'm bonkers, but im going to have another look at what you can squeeze under 13 inch rims.

I saw a very rapid escort on 13 inch wheels with Alcons and Willwood do a caliper for a 240mm disc . I've heard mixed reports about Willwood though.

mixed reports on willwoods?

i'm sure if you look hard enough you'd find mixed reports on anything these days, particularly on'tinterweb!

I should think they're excellent calipers Tim, lightweight, well made, blah blah blah, but the key thing is they have to be chosen correctly.

too big, too small, wrongly portioned, or mismatched into the whole system, and any brake manufacture could supply a costly mistake.

I can get you a pair of 2014 F1 AP Monoblock Calipers with Carbon Discs and Pads if you want Tim, they fit inside 13's too, but i bet they'd be awful!

That's true....people generally report a bad experience before a good one.

Tim,

I have 257mm vented alfa 164 discs and 4 pot wilwood powerlite calipers and ferodo ds2500 pads on my hubs.
13 x 6 Revolution RFXs fit over them with no clearance issues.
I can't tell you how they perform as I have not tried them yet.

Thanks,

Adam

Adam

I now remember your other thread about brakes.

I will see if I can find the photos, but if not would you mind sharing the brake pics again?

I think you had a spacer / carrier made?

Thanks Tim

Tim,

My thread is still somewhere on the dark side it's called Trackday Alfasud..

I have the photos on my pc and will upload them for completeness tomorrow.

I'll put them on a different post to save getting in the way of Bryan's thread.

Thanks,

Adam
