Thanks Bryan. It will be Richs first ever race and he is using the Golf.
It failed to start this afternoon so a bit of a panic. No spark but found a loose connection on the coil. Big fat spark restored. Would not start as previously flooded. The old Indian trick of a blow lamp to warm/dry each plug and then fit them warm sorted that.
We are ready.

Great finishes for all four cars - well done! Looks like Malcolm had a good battle with an Escort and Simon/Duncan were close throughout. Good first race finish for Richard in the Golf too!

Is that the class championship sewn up now Simon?

Thanks Tim. The Skoda was a strange looking car. It will be on my video as I lap him

Thanks Brian. Bit of controversy for you. My throttle cable outer sheath passed through the rubber grommet retainer and I lost all throttle control at Stowe Corner on the last lap.
I free wheeled into the pit lane and didn't pass the chequered flag on the last lap. Must have passed the timing beacon in the pit lane.

Assuming I am a DNF and zero points today - I have 73 points in class D. Malcolm has 67 after his win today.

Tomorrow if Malcolm wins and gets fastest lap - he will have 75 points.

If I come in second tomorrow - I will have 78 points.

Chopped up a golf metal exhaust gasket to fix the throttle cable for tomorrow - I will take a pic!

Rich did brilliantly today for his first ever race in the Golf. Duncan was driving really well but was being held up by the Camaro. I only got passed Duncan because I was stalking him and then he was impeded by a back marker. Malcolm was a full 3 seconds a lap faster than last year and put in a stonking 1:23.

It was a lot of fun today. Pleased to see Ted at the track who came down to support us all.

All the Best,
Simon

I noted you'd got past Duncan on the last lap - I didn't consider it was via the pitlane! It's obviously a happy coincidence that your laptime through the pits (and missing out 'Club') was representative of your others (and not considerably faster - drawing attention to itself). Looking at TSL you have been classified and gridded as per the results. My guess is that you'll start in that position unless someone protests or has a word - gagging order on Malcolm :-) If it was F1 then Duncan would have been on the radio to Mr Whiting!

Great results all round then - team orders? Have fun, get a finish :-)

Hello CAF!
As Simon has already said, a great day today.
No protests from me, I think double points should be awarded for pulling off a 1998 Schumacher-esque piece of race craft!

A red Firenza drove into the right rear wheel as I went around village and after which I had some sharp bits of wheel arch slowly cutting into my tyre on the left handlers. Should all hold together for tomorrow :?
Also had a big old slidey moment on first part of lap 2 going round Abbey.

Unfortunately all on video and will put up very soon.

A great, fun day and we even have our own special mini Alfasud paddock!

Thankfully you don't have the complication of measuring underfloor plank thickness after each race :-)

Sounds like you both had eventful races - it all looks so straightforward watching it on TSL! I'll look forward to the in-car footage :-)

Good luck tomorrow!

Thanks. You have to admire someone who races a very unusual car like that. I think that type of Skoda might have been in rally competitions way back also.

Makes the grid the bit more interesting.

Loving the Skoda! :P

Bit awkward back in the day when they were current road cars, but i expect that one is a very good race car by the looks of it.

They were Tim - and many 'special saloons' had Skoda bodies.....over single seater chassis and powertrains! Of course, their rallying ability was well known - many victories in the upto 1300 class.

Back on Alfa's (and Golf) - well done Simon, Malcolm, Duncan and Richard - great last race and very successful season - 1st and 2nd Overall in Class D?

As Tim says, credit to the underdog. If you watch the guy's in-car footage, when they lap it, it does look very high at the back but I have never seen it before at one of Simon and Malcolm's meets.
Always had a soft spot for old Skodas.

Hi guys,

The throttle temporary repair held up well.
Today I didn’t attempt 5th at any time but the Car performed brilliantly duelling with a Lotus Cortina and Rover 3500.

Hi Guys,

The side exhaust was quite badly damaged at Lydden. Festival Italia at Brands and the last two races at Silverstone were completed with a jubilee clip clamping the side pipe to the trailing arm Front mount.

At the noise check just prior to the last race of the season the car failed at 106db. The tester sent me away to warm the engine for a second test. Not good.

Picked the car up from Simpson Racing Exhausts this morning. What a lovely job. Look at those welds.

The fuel pump had to be removed but it will be easy enough to find that a new home.

Nice "dime stacking" bit of tig weld there, they are renowned for that.

Whats the noise level now Simon?

Hi Shrew,

I don't know the answer to that. It was fine for 1.5 seasons with the one middle box but got gradually noisier so it ended up as 106db at 4000rpm.

So hopefully less than 102 db now.

Simon

It's over a year since anything has been posted about the Trofeo so I thought I'd give an update on where things are. A lot of you already know (and have been involved) but for those that haven't.......

I bought the car from Simon late last year and asked Tom to start a re-build/refresh so that it would be ready for racing again. I have to admit that I wasn't too sure which championship to run it in so I thought we'd get it ready and worry about that when the time came.
Tom stripped and rebuilt the engine after finding nothing that needed replacing but the gearbox was worn and we took the decision to replace the entire box with a new one with AHM gear set and a Gripper Diff and paddle clutch. The suspension again was rebuilt with new rose joints and the brakes refreshed. Easy for me to write that in a couple of lines but it was a massive job that Tom undertook and one that was finished in July when we first ran the car on a scorching day at Cadwell Park.

Some photos taken during build.......

IMG_5356.JPG
The test went really well and we made a few changes to the car - deleted the front anti roll bar, added some brake ducting and changed to softer front pads which made the car even better - again, easy for me to say but a lot of work. We ran the car again at Cadwell in October when Guy Martin was there filming his 'Fastest Van' programme. There's a few seconds of the Trofeo on the programme. I had the camera on for the last run which is here: https://youtu.be/FcZWAOEflrw

A few days after this I entered the car in the Classic Alfa Challenge at Donington which looked interesting. As it turned out, it had 27 people entered with Alfas from the 1950 - the 1980's. I'll post about that latter.....

Cheers,

Ted

Thanks for publishing your update Ted. I think that everyone would want a loved car to be cherished but to see it go on to be developed to a whole new level of racing is absolutely fantastic. Congratulations to you and Tom for outstanding work. I couldn't be with you at Donnington but it was so exciting watching the race on live TSL timing. The commentator made it very clear that first and second place were being contested between a 2 litre Alfa GTV and the 1.3 litre Sud. Unfortunately, the race was cut to 15 mins instead of the planned 30 mins. As the race progressed you were closing the gap rapidly and you probably needed just another lap or two to take the win. Second place out of 22 cars and getting the fastest lap was a fantastic result.

All the best,
Simon

Looks great in the vid at Caldwell.

If the hrdc gets off the ground in 2019 do you think you would enter again ?

I’m going to try and stay with the hscc 70’s roadsports, but the grids are increasing and I might not get an entry at some circuits via the invitation class, so might need a second option.

Hi Ted,

Really enjoyed watching you racing the Trofeo at Castle Combe on Saturday. Many congratulations. Great result.
I hope you don't mind me parachuting in this video for the guys to see.

The Trofeo was spitting out a bit of flame as a parting shot in this picture!

All, Castle Combe Classic was a superb event and the Alfa Challenge race was brilliant fun. It was great to not only have Simon come down to watch, support and video what was going on but also knowing that Nicolino Moffa and Franco Marinierra were 'watching' in Campobasso, Italy. So, all 4 owners of the Trofeo were together in spirit at least.

I didn't have a video camera on in the car so have no footage but Chris Snowdon who came second did and I've put a link to the video here: https://youtu.be/tFdEOVybNrw

Interesting to see the ebb and flow of the race; Chris was massively quicker in a straight line (doesn't his Alfetta sound good?) and quicker under braking into quarry but I think I had the better of him through the chicanes and Tower and Camp corners. What the video doesn't show unfortunately is just how many times we were side by side around the track, he is quite an adversary is Chris!!

Anyway, the Trofeo screamed its way around for the win with the occasional spit of flames to try a scare the Alfetta!!

Cheers all, Ted
