The car went to the rolling road today for testing and tuning. It was running beautifully by the end.
The power is available from 7000rpm and peaks at 8000rpm.

Hi Keith,
The output is interesting to say the least:
image.jpg
The tester described his dyno as the "heart breaker". He says it is very accurate but you can get a result that is more than 20bhp higher on another dyno?

I wondered if it was at the wheels but the figure of 117 would be far too high?

Anyway, it's running beautifully so let's see how I do at Snetterton.

Thats a good figure I would have thought Simon, I know she is far from standard but still 1300 cc.
I am going to try and get over.
Can't miss a chance to see so many suds on the track. :D

Hi Keith,

I have some official docs with the car that state 146bhp at 8400rpm I think.
146 always seemed awfully high and so it seems.
Still kept up with the SC at Rockingham which has a rolling road figure of 157.5bhp at the flywheel?

I think we need to use the same rolling road to compare apples with apples.

Anyway, I am going to have a lot of fun at Snetterton with it running so well. Also, with 15 litres of fuel onboard the car will be about about 35KG lighter overall.

Really looking forward to seeing Ted in action sorting out the faster cars.

All the best,
Simon

I wouldn't worry about the figures, it picked up well in the vid.

8400rpm.....

Hi Guys,
A bit more weight loss today. I am putting Lexan side windows in but making sure it uses existing fittings and is reversible.
Here is the door glass:
image.jpg
One Quarter light weighs 0.6kg
One Door window weighs 4.06kg
Rear window and frame weighs 3.54kg
image.jpg
Total per side 8.2kg
Lexan window cut with a section on the bottom to replicate the glass window steel winder bracket:
image.jpg
All Lexan in place:
image.jpg
Lexan Quarter light weighs 0.35kg
Lexan door window weighs 1.96kg
Lexan rear window weighs 1.55kg
Lexan total per side of 3.86kg

Hi Johnboy,

You probably know that Lexan is just a trade name for polycarbonate sheet and you can get it in bronze, grey etc. I opted for clear 5mm. Its incredibly tough.
We bought sheet to various pre-cut sizes to make windows for two Suds and the Golf Gti. Probably got enough for the Fiat 131 as well.
Just the rear window to do on the Trofeo now. Really happy with the weight savings. This is all old news to the many seasoned racers on here but all new to me.

Brgds,
Simon

Hi Simon,

This might be of interest,

I gave plastics for performance an old front screen from a sud to make a template
and purchased a lexan screen myself.

Hi Liam,

Thanks for that. It would be great but we have to keep the original windscreen under CTCRC rules.

Hi Guys,
I wanted the rear windows to open for ventilation and for the fitment of Lexan panes to be totally reversible. I made up some stainless brackets. These bolt up to the door pillar with rubber washers as per the original design to allow the window to hinge for opening.
Seems to have worked out well.

Hi Tim,

I used Malcolms electric jigsaw with protective tape on the foot plate and a metal cutting blade. Tight corner radii finished on the bench grinder.

Rear window today. Bought a replacement rear window seal so decided to cut the existing one as I didn't want to risk breaking the glass getting it out. I think it is a series 2 seal?

I dressed the cut seal and put it back in.

Window placed on the Lexan sheet and mark round it with a scriber.
image.jpg
Cut out the lexan window with a jigsaw and dress the corners with a dremel.
image.jpg
The lexan window is half the weight - so a loss of 4kg.
image.jpg
It's a 10min job to take the lexan window out now and fully reversible. Not water tight but the car is garaged apart from when racing.
image.jpg
Bonnet and boot next.

Boot replaced with a glass fibre one:

Bonnet replaced with a glass fibre one:
image.jpg
The car weighed 904kg with me in it and just residual fuel.
After windows, boot and bonnet the car now weighs 871kg with me in it and residual fuel.
The spoiler is still to be fitted and the boot and bonnet need painting so let's say 875kg.
Very happy with that.

Nicely presented Simon.
Very clear to see the improvements in weight loss.
Glass fibre panels look very nicely made.
Roll on next season. 8-)
