Re: 1974 Alfasud Trofeo
blimey, that's a nasty break, could have been a real disaster without available run-off space
all this extra pace you're now putting through it, fantastic lap time improvement

Wow....I'll be checking mine !
It's the front arm that usually cracks, worth checking those for fatigue.
That's a great lap time, my best is 1:43 way back in 2007.

Hi guys,
Some things put a smile on your face beyond all importance.
My spare wheels came back from refurb today, cracking job. While being diamond cut they have managed to keep the wheel size and Speedline name.
Should look great on the car.
Brgds

Re: 1974 Alfasud Trofeo
Hi Guys,
There was a spare engine with the Trofeo and I was not sure what it was.
I took the cylinder head off and it is 1512cc and it looks like it is high compression and has been gas flowed and polished but standard valves at 38/33mm?
Everything looks overhauled with new pistons, polished rods and polished crank plus a baffled sump.
Might be wise to fit some ARP big end bolts though.
Brgds

Re: 1974 Alfasud Trofeo
Are the Pistons std and do the cams look reprofiled ? 1512cc is +4 I think.
I have a 1700 engine with 38mm valves, it gave more torque but a similar top end power to 40mm but that was mild tune not race.
My other 1500 engine is all std components, I think 40mm valves and reprofiled cams and that gave good top end power so you probably still have a powerful engine there.

Re: 1974 Alfasud Trofeo
Hi Tim,
Thanks for the info. The pistons are stamped 84.6mm
I don't know what a re-profiled cam would look like? The valve lift is 9mm if that helps.
I have been trying to work out the compression ratio but I am getting awfully high figures. Back to the numbers to try again.
Brgds,
Simon

Re: 1974 Alfasud Trofeo
+6mm in that case, got my maths wrong!
I can't remember what std lift is, but I know some reprofiled cams that were described as full race were well over 10, I think 10.9.
I have two old sets, one single lobe and one twin lobe. I'll see if I can dig them out as I'm sure they are stamped....however the high tens are what I remember
Having said that, the lift gives power but no end low like the trofeo, so just like the SC Sud, an all rounder still drives very well.
Just a random document.

Re: 1974 Alfasud Trofeo
Thanks Tim.
I read that bigger valves and more valve lift both increase the flow rate in the head linearly up to a limit of course.
My latest calculations come out with a compression ratio of 10.8 : 1 which I reckon is not far out.

Simon

Re: 1974 Alfasud Trofeo
Those cams look proper high-lifty to me. Base circle diameter looks smaller than stock, so may be re-profiled lobes rather than a new forging.
But very nice all the same - proper old skool engineering. Very envious

Re: 1974 Alfasud Trofeo
Hi Lauren,
Just ordered a king size mattress plastic bag and 4 x 1kg bags of desiccant.
Engine and desiccant in the bag.
Suck out all the air with a vacuum cleaner and twist the bag neck and ty-wrap the neck back on itself to seal the evacuated bag.
Should keep the engine nice and corrosion free while in storage. I will probably re-oil the camshafts and cylinder bores first.

You know what, I've always wondered about the best way to store a freshly built engine.Marlow Sud wrote:Hi Lauren,

Re: 1974 Alfasud Trofeo
Very good.....except I wouldn't be letting it get gravel rash on that lane.
Maybe we should hire Blyton for a day and make a combined video, racers and road goers .
In fact I'm checking hire costs now (which have probably quintupled since ginetta bought it)

We've all heard that old chestnut 'Drive it like you've stolen it' haven't we? Does that include Trofeo Alfasuds as well.........?
