Carbs are off for an overhaul. The fine mesh filters were dirty but not blocked. The float spindles and the float chamber valves were worn. The floats needed adjusting to the required 12mm clearance and the intake trumpets needed replacing due to corrosion on the inner surfaces.

New fuel pump fitted and awaiting a new tank.

While the carbs are off, I am looking at fitting a heatshield. This is ceramic coated with a gold finish on the hot side.

The new gear change system is in place and works really well. It was designed by Jason Moyles at JMR Clubsport. Lovely job.

Just need to modify the aperture in the switch panel a bit. Doh.

Carbs are back on with the heatshield underneath.

Just need to fit the new fuel tank and STAC fuel gauge. Then off for a rolling road check and tune.

All the best,
Simon

Hi guys,

Replacement foam filled fuel tank is in:
BED6EA92-44AE-4A41-96D8-7EF6F3DC8465.jpeg
In the Golf there is no boot compartment so you need to seal off the tank. The box I have at the minute is made of aluminium step plate and is very crude.

I asked Concept to make me a box lid from a drawing and they have done me proud:

Just need to fit an access panel to get to the filler cap.
It will fit nicely on the ledge around the top of the wheel well.

Hi Guys,
When I overhauled the carbs I reset the various adjustment screws to standard settings as follows:
D74D1BB2-6407-495D-AE30-0C403EFB25F6.png
I started the car and it was running terribly. Just like it was running on two or three cylinders. Rough enough to think I wouldn’t be able to drive it on the trailer to get it to the tuners tomorrow.

Very handy having another racing golf 5 feet away. I wound in one of the mixture idle screws on that car and found they were 3.5 turns out. The standard setting is 2 turns out.
That improved things. Then I listened to the carbs with a silicon tube and adjusted the balance screw until they were making the same noise. Idle mixture screws in half a turn and it was better. Dropped the idle down and the pickup was a little sluggish. Idle mixture screws in another 1/4 turn and the pickup was fine. So my idle mixture screws are 2 3/4 turns out.

I am sure it’s not perfect but it sounds quite sweet and I won’t be embarrassed tomorrow taking it to the tuners for him to do his thing.

Hi Guys,
Rolling road today. It started at 149bhp and finished up at 156bhp as follows:

It was running too rich and the ignition was tweaked.

Is that at the wheels or flywheel?
Are you pleased with that figure and how does it compare with your other car?

good result / time at Rockingham Simon - what happened in Qualifying ?

Hi RSFruitbat,
The plot is from Novatech in Slough. We are using that dyno as a benchmark. It’s power at the flywheel.
The only other cars to compare this to are the Trofeo - 117bhp and the red Golf -125bhp.
This Golf does have some go in it. We reckon the Escorts are 200-210bhp so I am going to need the 185-190bhp Golf 1840cc engine I am having built if I want to compete with them.

Hi Tim,
When the Golf was coming off the dyno, the rear brakes locked on. We played with the bias adjuster and they released but the brake box looked corroded.
On Friday at 8pm I finished fitting a new brake box. All seemed fine. It was meant as retrofit for a Golf mk1 but needed a lot of work to make it fit.
During qualifying as the brakes got hot they seized up on the second lap.
Got a lot of help in the paddock and we cut the cylinder rods down by 1in each.
The guys went off to the assembly area with the cylinders needing refitting. I made the first race by the skin of my teeth!
Still 1.5sec a lap slower than The escorts but have made good progress.

Thanks Keith. It is a track that is tough on the cars!
My qualifying was pants as I only had a few laps and I need the practice to get a descent time. We all came off early due to oil on the track.

Started 10th on the grid. Had a good race apart from an Escort rear wing/wheel kiss.

I think I am fourth for the next race in 20 mins.
