Re: Escort Hunter Killer
Hi Guys,
It was great to catch up with Tim and his dad, Keith and Kev. Had quite a few technical problems with the Golfs. Duncs car stuck in third during practice. Malcolms car had a problem with the clutch. When you depressed it the engine tried to shake itself out of its mounts. My car had the nearside hub nut start to undo which was fortunately easily fixed by re-torquing it.
On looking at the videos from Castle Combe & Donnington compared to Cadwell, my engine noise is very different and it seems to have lost some fizz! We will get it on the rolling road and look into this. Maybe Dick Dastardly has tapped into my bluetooth ignition and changed it. Surely he couldnt have got round the pass code of 0000 or 1234?
https://youtu.be/datMjH31b14
This winter, the Golf will have new shock absorbers fitted and heavier springs as we think the handling can be improved a lot. The nose of the car is too lively and external video shows the car getting bouncy through gooseneck when other cars are not. Particularly as the race goes on and the oil gets hot in the shock absorbers.
Overall the Akai still went well and having fun trying to improve my driving. Lots of mistakes in the first race lost me time.

Have a friend kevin jones with a mark 1 escort rs1600
Look at youtube kevin jones ford escort, mk1 rs1600 1971 original rally car with 2.0 bda engine fitted, it starts 34th and last on the grid at varano in the wet and overtakes ferrari 250 swbs, lightweight e types and wins the race from last place 34th on the grid, overtakes everything, a
Also have a look at you tube kevin jones ford capri, guarantee you will enjoy if you watch, spa and 330hp is fun
Adies ahm 2018 donington back of the grid youtube video epic but then 450hp from a boxer engine would be nice, speed down the straight unbelivable

Re: Escort Hunter Killer
Hi Guys,
I hope you are all staying well.
The engine in Malcolm's golf has been improved. It was previously about 167bhp. It remains 1799cc so he has 49cc less than me and Dunc but his peak power at 7500rpm is now 198bhp - new cam, new carbs, new exhaust manifold and a lot of tuning experience and know-how from JMR.
Duncans engine was previously about 140bhp on KJet injection. It remains 1848cc but is now 191bhp on carbs and has the potential to be 200-205bhp. It has the most torque at 150lbft at 5500rpm. Again great work by JMR.
So the scores are:
Akai - 189bhp / 7500
Red - 191bhp / 7500
Green - 198bhp / 7500
Akai - 146 lbft / 5500
Green - 148 lbft / 5500
Red - 150 lbft / 5500
Between 4500-5500rpm the Green Golf has a big torque loss so we need to see how that plays out and whether Malcolm can keep the car on the boil. At the top end, this engine revs well and the power and torque is consistently higher to 8000rpm and beyond. If the engine setup is an issue then we can easily change it to the spec of the red Golf.
Not sure if there will be any racing in 2020 but we will be ready.

Re: Escort Hunter Killer
We have the brakes sorted now after several iterations.
Good LSD and gear ratios.
Handling is absolutely key. I would rather be in a car that handles really well with 160bhp than one that is not well set up with 190bhp.

That’s great power from an 1800, and I think you stuck with a std crank ?
I’m not holding out hope of any racing this year, although I renewed my licence and club membership in feb before things went into melt down.
I guess we just have to wait and see.

Re: Escort Hunter Killer
Hi Johnboy, I had a first hand example. The car was at Castle Combe on a practice day and on passing the start finish straight you want to go flat out but all the focus was on keeping the steering straight. The car seemed unstable and there was a massive effort to keep it straight.
Back in the pits the guys set about the front suspension setup.
Back on the track it was transformed and felt as solid as a rock. You could hammer down the straight and not even think about keeping it straight and the lap times started to tumble. It was a massive eye opener to me. Driver confidence in the car is a huge factor.

I think you might be right about no racing Tim. No sporting organisation wants to get hammered by the media for being seen to be putting the public at risk.
I am guessing there might be some testing.

Re: Escort Hunter Killer
I think most sports are waiting until football starts again, that'll be the floodgates opened.
I'm confident we will see some racing this year, but with all the big series waiting to get back on track like F1, Touring cars, MotoGP, WSB, etc the available slots will be vastly reduced so that will limit what exactly gets out on track.
The limiting factor won't be available tracks as there is enough circuits to get through a lot of racing each weekend in the UK, but there isn't the depth of officials to run them. Marshalls, Doctors, Race medics and ambulances, recovery teams, promoting teams etc. They can't be in two places at once so there won't be enough to put on say 10 meetings each weekend should we get some action around September time.

MotoGP is looking like starting the 2020 season at Jerez July 17-19 , then round 2 will be the following week again at Jerez so nobody has to travel.Marlow Sud wrote: ↑Wed May 06, 2020 9:54 pmI do hope it will be September Kev because that will be Snetterton and it’s a great track!

There will be no spectators, no media, no independent TV companies so just the Dorna feed (which is the race feed anyway) which will have the commentators away from the circuit as used to happen.
A huge amount of planning seems to have gone in.
The three classes of MotoGP, Moto2 & Moto3 will have restricted personnel to a number dependant on class and within the MotoGP class dependant if a factory team or not. With the team staff/riders/Doctors/Dorna personnel they have it still at 1,300 people there for the weekend.
Everyone will have to be tested 4 days before travelling, or longer if currently outside EU, then again at arrival at the circuit and every day whilst there. Everyone will have a medical test every day for any signs of the virus. Carmelo Ezpeleta the head of Dorna sports said 10,000 test kits will be used....
I would imagine there's also a monetary deal for Jerez promotors too, a huge investment with no income from 100,000 missing spectators..
Imagine the headache that involves.
Can we really see any club racing taking place this year? Got my doubts now...

Hi Guys,
I started racing in 2014 aged 50. Six years years down the track and never a podium finish. A fourth once but never a podium. So just like London buses everything arrived at once. 10th/11th October at Silverstone - Qualified on pole in the dry. Won race 1. Won race 2 and got the driver of the day award. How on earth did that happen?
1. I practiced.
2. The car had no issues.
3. All the JMR car development was in action.
4. A competitor gave me a bolt that would have prevented me racing.
5. It rained and was slippy - perfect for the Golf.
6. I had a lucky break passing a back marker in race 2.

Thanks for the comments Mufasa. Glad you enjoyed it.
The job for the winter is to get a dog box fitted with slightly different ratios.
The Golf is 121mph at max power at the minute and I am told it is capable of 125-130mph before it hits an aerodynamic wall.
All the best

Thanks Lou.
The car goes well when we can keep it serviceable. We keep breaking things because everything is under stress.
Great fun when on track and I am learning all the time. We still have scope to squeeze another 10hp out of the engine if we want it but we have enough at the minute.
