Sprint performance parts needed

Post by AlfaCorseChris »

Hi guys,

just bought another Sprint which is going to replace my white 33 next season.

Partly because I've taken my 33 up to the point where I dont want to mess with it anymore and I dont want to make it unusable on the road, but mainly because competition is getting stronger and very close, so they are making the rules more strict for next year in the class that I race and I wont be able to race in a car with a standalone ecu etc...

So,

The Sprint I bought is a rust bucket on the outside, but sills and floor panels are solid. A pilars need a bit of work and so does the roof. Worst place is where the hinges bolt on for the rear hatch.
Bodywise I'll get it sorted, no problem.

Engine it came with is a siezed 1.5, so bought a used 1.7 (305.50) which I stripped for a full rebuild.

I need to source out some performance parts for the suspension and handling as well as some weight reduction.
I already have a heavy duty rear sway bar for it - if I change the rear axle to the boxed one with the rear disc brakes.

Do any of you have, performance parts that they dont want anymore or can do without ?

Now discussed :D

Suitable for any 8v engine given the correct set up of heads and valve clearance essentially.

More specs to come this weekend hopefully, unless anyone has spec for Holbay 445's?

Anyway, does anyone else have stuff I can use to build a time attack sprint ?
Strut bars ? steering wheel hubs ? front suspension ?

Chris, why do you think you need better than yellows? Is the rest of the suspension going to be bespoke?

I have reds on my sprint, but the original Koni spec is irrelevant as they were revalved for racing height and spec, as were the yellows I have.

Shrew - what did those reds come off ?

The problem with Konis on my car and in this climate, is that as soon as they get hot, they soften up and let go.

Oil within becomes too thin and goes through the pressure valve so easily it softens up the ride and doesnt hold me down anymore.

On the other hand, the travel is way too long, not helping on the track. They can be used I suppose IF revalved but I have no idea who to contact about this, what its gonna cost and how long it will take - as nobody can do them locally.

Intrax is the ony company I found that do coilovers for 33's suds and sprints, but they are way too expensive for me at this stage.

A friend made his own coilovers on his 33, using K Sport front coilovers out of a honda integra and welding brackets and arms on it to make it work.

If you were too rebuild something for either warmer climate or different use, the oil grade, viscosity and quantity can be adjusted to target that purpose much better.

We used to do this with forks all the time.

Over here, leda are still trading from near me close to newark, gaz built the coilovers on my sud only a couple of years ago, both if which are likely cheaper than intrax anyway, but the options are there.

Failing that, whats stopping you building your own with threaded sleeves for 2.25" coil springs and a good insert?

Or adapt another coilover from another car by using your alfas bottom bracket, steering arm extension, and a pillowball top mount?

It can all be done,

Even in Cyprus! :P

It can be done mate, its just that I'd rather get something thats tested and works, rather than play with heights and stiffness myself.

How much would Leda or Gaz charge to make these ?

Gaz charged me £320 About 2yrs ago for struts without top mounts. Quoted £40 / unit for rebuild. had to provide them with 2 strut casings as donors for mounts.
Rally Designs do a 2.25" conversion kit which is simple to instal. Shockers are still the problem though.
I'd suggest speaking to Gaz.

Racers can you give you spring rates. I've used upt to 350lb on tarmac and on the road. settled on 225lb at the moment as a compromise.

they were fine chris, it was the rear on the sud which was the issue!

they did a fair job with them, lowered the steering arm too so it kept it straight and level

they do a load of work over here in UK, one of the leaders in suspension upgrades i'd say for the cost

Fantastic !

They havent replied yet though... :/

Shrew, I'm on hold regarding the cams mate. They have decided that they will change the regulations for 2016 regarding allowed modifications, so I'm on hold :(
