Escort Hunter Killer
Re: Escort Hunter Killer
Hi, this is the brembo cataogue, you can search by car model or by disk dimension
(better selecting "2mm tollerance" in red position;
Ps: the search module by dimension is quick but it will find most but not all
the disks that are present in the catalogue searching by car model):
https://www.bremboparts.com/europe/en/c ... rance=True
It seams that your finding of rover disk is the best stayng at 262mm diameter.
As you say, most commercial disks are less than 40mm height;
There are some commercial 50-51mm height disk but most are only 257mm diameter
(somethink similar also from old alfa 164 )
In the middle there are some finding at 48-49mm but with too large centering hole.
If you can add 10mm spacer,
at 46mm height you have a nice selection of disk (from toyota/mazda)
easy to adapt (only verify the golf hub plate diameter can go inside the disk):
100x4, 55 centering hole, 22mm (or 20) , diameters 270 or 275.
About alfa 33 disk modification on 14 rims,
Ok I'll put a tread next days (or add a post to an existing similar tread);
it is not a completely new information, many other treads existed
on using opel(vauxall) calibra/astra brake caliper on 33,
I just added a lighter option for the caliper (oper tigra/corsa)
and some more easy to adapt/lighter disks.

Hi Guys,
I came across a new problem today:
This will require 3.5mm to be machined to allow the calliper mounts to fit inside the disc. This is in addition to reducing the disc diameter from 262mm to 256mm, increasing the centre bore from 64mm to 65mm, machining 4x100 new hub stud holes.
Just getting a dwg file produced of my calliper mount so I can hand it to a machinist to get two produced.
Then I will be good to go!
Using the current Dynalites for now.
Brgds

Hi Guys,
The 190bhp + engine will be built this winter ready for 2018. The gearbox final drive ratio and gear ratios are sorted. Gripper LSD, steel flywheel and beefy clutch.
Here is a video of a Golf Mk1 with the same engine. Apparently, bags of torque. I am being sent the dyno plot. I am advised he is only revving to 7500 instead of 8500, the brakes are standard road discs / callipers and the chassis setup is not sorted.

Oh - I forgot to say, the Morgan is a V8.
All the best,
Simon

Do you still plan to use the trofeo?
Golf looks like it will do the job.

Hi Keith,
I will have done Class D for two full years so I want to have a go at Class C.
The Trofeo will have to sit in the shed or get raced by someone else

Re: Escort Hunter Killer
Perhaps you could ask if the trofeo could run at Goodwood members meeting ? Be a nice addition to that grid.

Re: Escort Hunter Killer
Hi guys,
I would love to race at Goodwood but the Trofeo is not quick enough to keep up with the traffic even if I put the spare 1500 Trofeo engine in it.
Looking at the Goodwood lap times and comparing them to Thruxton, a suitable car would need to be as quick as the CTCRC winning Escort.
The Golf is expected to be as quick as that and if branded up in period livery and I can drive it well enough - maybe I will get an invite.
Thanks for the offer Kev!
Just coming back from Wembley after seeing Mickey Flanagan - Brilliant.

Hi Guys,
I think I am getting close to getting a four pot caliper in a 14in Golf ATS Cup wheel.
The original Mk1 Golf front discs are 239mm with a one pot steel caliper.
The Rover discs are machined and the new caliper brackets are finished. At first fit the caliper brackets needed 1mm machining off the mount face.
I was planning on no wheel spacers but I do need a 5mm spacer: The disc is currently 256mm but can be 264mm. I have another pair of Tarox on the way. The lower ball joint clearance is not much. Here is the clearance with the wheel supporting the car weight. All the best,
Simon

Wow !! you have been busy Simon.
Panels and brakes look great. Roll on next year.

Re: Escort Hunter Killer
Ball joint does look close to the disc as you say, only to get closer as the suspension arm pivots up and alters the angle between them.
Will be well worth making a heat shield for the ball joint rubber.
A lot of fords have a simple shield held in place by the ball joint pin, this then protects the rubber boot, with your bigger brakes it'll get fried and dry the grease out in no time!
Amazing work on the set up, really well thought out and engineered

Could well be I meant Peugeot
No good having a memory so useless as mine!
Not at all sure what they usually come on now!
But simple enough to make something, if nothing shows up from anywhere..
They are like this, hole through the ball pin with a locktag to keep it from turning right round

Hi Guys,
The Tarox discs arrived today. Much better quality than the MTEC ones but more than twice the price.
The disc diameter will be slight larger now to cover all of the pad area. 262mm instead of 256mm.

Re: Escort Hunter Killer
Hi Guys,
I ran in to a problem I want to share. This is the 5mm spacer:
The wheel was rubbing in one small area as if it was buckled. What I discovered by laying the wheel face down, adding the spacer, then the disc and then dropping in a spare hub - was that the hub was not locating the wheel concentrically.
The fix is to use a bigger spacer that has a concentric shoulder as follows:
I think the tyre will run within the arch ok but if not I will machine the back face of the spacer to take it down to 6mm.
Disc setup is pretty much finalised now:
Next step is to think about a heat shield for the lower ball joint and sort out ducting for disc cooling.

Nothing is straight forward is it Simon ?
Nice work, you are always busy.

Re: Escort Hunter Killer
Excellent work. The golf is the only other car I thought about to race, must be the hot hatch era that causes it.
Looking forward to seeing it. Does it need to stay in injectors or could you fit carbs ?
Still think the kamai livery would look incredible on the track, or jagermiester.
In terms of rpm, as I was once told, revs = speed so if you are going to eat the escorts then I think you will need the 8k+ rpm.
What's it going to weigh in at, 950kg with you in it ?

Hi Tim,
Not been on the forum for a while.
The Golf has carbs on it already - twin 45s I think. I have checked - and they are allowed. Should weigh in at 906Kg with empty fuel.
Here is a typical set of curves for the engine going in it:

Have you sorted the brake mods now?
Roll on this coming season.

Hi Keith,
The brakes are all done now thanks Keith.
I got a Golf performance book and it tells you where to look on the block to check if it is 1.8 or 2.0. I am pleased to say that the existing engine is 1.8!
The new engine is still under build so I can start the season with this engine if necessary.

Had a conversation today about 2litre Pinto Mk1 Escorts Vs Golf GTi Mk1. This is what the main man said:
A full race genuine 2ltr pinto is 220hp max...most are between 200-210...i saw an article on this a couple of years ago saying it was a DTW engine (Dave Wild is very good with an accurate dyno) making 197hp from memory...ill try and find out. Torque wise they make between 150-160ibft....so on the top side it's 232hp/tonne and 170ibft/tonne....yours should be around 210hp/tonne 163ibft/tonne...not a huge amount in it.

Hi Guys,
Getting a few jobs done so I can race at the end of this month at Silverstone.
New oil cooler with 16 rows instead of 13. New fresh air vents and plumbing to wash fresh air over the carbs and take the exhaust heat downwards and under the car.
New Bluetooth distributor arrived today. They don’t make them so they produced a drawing from my old distributor.

Hi Guys,
It’s a bit of a mad rush to get the car ready for Saturday. I have to add 30kg to be 5kg over min weight of 905kg.
It still needs to be painted some time this year and get the 190bhp JMR engine dropped in.
