My day

Post by KevJTD »

working in a small village garage that does the old VW campers brings with it an unusual array of cars to work on.

i had 5 MoT's to do today.
first off a 2009 berlingo van.
last one was my own 2000 punto
before that a 2010 octavia
before that one a VW T4 campervan
best of the day though was my 2nd test.

this little 1956 beauty 8-)

best split screen there is :)

close mate.

octavia failed, wires hanging out of the tyres
T4 failed, can't remember on what but wasn't anything much.
berlingo only had a dip beam out so sorted that quick.
the moggy passed of course, it's a much pampered car. actually is one of those that doesn't need an MoT as it's a 1956 car, but the owner likes to get a 2nd opinion on how the cars is 8-)

my own punto?
that failed :o
one bottom arm bush and a ball joint rubber split.
ordered a couple of arms and roll bar rubbers. just got to find time to fit them and get it re-tested

Interested to know what insurance companies would say in the case of a claim - "..but my car doesn't need a certificate". Has anyone had experience of this?

another question i asked the ministry training fella, which he didn't really seem to get what i was on about was...
if a pre 1960 car (which doesn't need, but can have if chosen, an MoT by law now) is given an MoT but fails, can the owner then say "oh well, i don't need an MoT. I will just carry on using it anyway"
are they entitled to do that?
can they just disregard the fail and carry on?

i really don't know to be honest, they couldn't tell me what to advise a customer if i'm asked. like they'd not thought of anyone doing that!

the whole no test needed is a whole can of worms that didn't need opening. cars of that age don't get such a thorough test anyway as they didn't have the items cars do now, emissions don't get tested as such for example. so the obvious thing would be to just have a basic safety test, to make sure the car isn't falling in half with rust or a suspension compnent about to fail.
most classic car owners either maintain the cars themselves and do a good job, they know the car well and what needs doing. or others pay garages to look after them so again, they are generally ok.
but it's the ones that don't do either of the above that are a risk to themselves and other road users.

the moggy fella and myself had a chat about this.
he told me of a guy with a car from the '30's who was at a show last year, had driven the car there. tyres were through to the canvas so god knows what the rest of the car was like. apparently there was a bit of "discussion" about him being a risk to other road users and putting the classic car owner in a bad light.

of course he would still be liable to the road trafic act so knackered tyres would get him in grief if caught on the road, no mot needed or not.

just another example of a rule being brought in where it's made things worse!

For insurance you have to have a check once a year ie safety check service or mot done at a garage / you need proof it was done invoice or mot so you can't just drive a car unchecked . We have a customer with a Austin 10 and that is what his insurance company advised

You can be pretty sure if there's a way of them not paying out on a claim they will . Think any one with a mot excempt vehicle needs to read the small print on their policy

A frustrating day on the Bentley as I had to take off and partially strip one of the doors - it had a tiny "ding" that we could not pull out or access the back to push out, so it has had to be skimmed and resprayed.
Then I did most of the dashboard wiring and got stuck on the cubby "tray" on and off 4 times trying to get it lined up!

Well spotted Shrew - I didn't notice how special those bulbs were - well they worked so I didn't disturb them.....
Anyway my day yesterday was to clean the Bentley after its "Flying Scotsman Rally".
