Been side tracked...........Alfa gt jtdm

Post by alfachris »

As always was looking on eBay and this Alfa gt jtdm court my eye plus was only 8 miles from home. Alfa gt 1.9 16v jtdm 2007 with red moo, Bose system, nearly new driveshafts and alloys for £1000

The listing said that turbo needed replacing over the phone but when they looked at it they said engine was u/s as well.

So I'm going to put the engine from my 156 jtdm in it. So the plan is to remove engine and box from the gt next week in the morning before I go to work then strip the 156 next weekend.
Before the engine goes in the gt I've got a solid flywheel, gta clutch and sort the oil leak on it

I started to strip the engine down to see what the problem was found the bottom for 3 glow plugs and injectors have melted............

I've got a complete engine from a 2006 car to go in it, solid flywheel with clutch and both intercooler hoses from autolusso
I've booked holiday between Xmas and new year so the plan is to get this done

A much under-rated car, great fun and surprisingly practical, but also full of the foibles and quirks that make it a true Alfa: i.e. stuff goes wrong with them! After much fixing, ours is behaving itself quite well at present but the squeaks and groans coming from the suspension suggest I will be spending money on bushes in the new year, that and I still have to get round to repairing the drivers seat bolster which was damaged by the PO.

I've had a 147 2.0, 156 2.4 10v jtd, 156 2.4 20v jtdm (which was a crap problem one) and a 156 1.9 16v jtdm which I've done 30k in it in a year so I know all the suspension noises etc lol

i'd stopped looking for a GT myself, we had one in at work recently and I convinced myself rear legroom was awful.....now having 2nd thoughts as to whether I was under evaluating it

how is rear legroom in them? I always assumed them being on the same platform as 147 they'd be about the same?

Will had a good aand bad day. It started off with removing gearbox off the s/hand engine to find a new clutch plus new dual mass flywheel.
Then started swapping bits over 2 glow plugs snapped in the head and crankshaft seal behind flywheel is weaping so need to ordered head gasket set and crank seal then remove head to get broken glow plugs out

bugger, can't seem to catch a break with this car eh chris.
I've had some very creaky glow plugs on jtd's but so far (rapidly touching wood) I've been lucky to not break any

good news on the clutch/DMF find though

you're right on the 156 platform JB, me getting my wires crossed again. 156 platform (albeit do I remember correctly it's been shortened by a couple of inches?) with 147 trim

The GTi is a great looking car, I prefer it to a GTV.

Wasn't it meant as a stop gap by Alfa, but ended up selling far more than expected?

Looks good value for a grand even with work needed.

The leather always looks good in one.

Yep when it's done all the main jobs will be done so I can just use it. I don't like the red leather plus drivers seat is worn looking at a mint black set.
I'll be after a set of 18" alloys blackline, miltispokes or ones from a 147 Ducati

I done like the gtv but only a 3.0 24v...........have a 2000 gtv 3.0 24v coming in a month or two from my mate that I got the 33 sport wagon

Do you think that is why the clutch and DM was replaced? Slipping clutch and didn't notice the leak.
I had a new clutch just before Christmas in my JTD. When stripped out it was the seal that was letting go and contaminated the plate, not just wear of the clutch.
Not bad for 100k. :D
Good luck with the re-fit.

Collected the black leather then fitted it.
Removed the cylinder head from the old engine to see the damage. Free'd off 2 of the seized injectors in the replacement engine but had to get the grinder to the 3rd one so I could remove cams then the cylinder head
Fitted the mtech quickshift

Yep still being a bitch but looking forward to driving it.
It had red leather in it but drivers seat was worn and the black leather was only 35 miles away from me
