Lots of talk about that on AO.
Don't chuck the manifold out as a popular trick is to "de-flap" it and re-map the JTDm engine .
I am sure you are already aware of this Chris. :D

just goes to prove my theory on putting no value to low miles, been ages since I bought a car under 100k.....by then it's had chance to properly go wrong!

Been tempted to remove and clean the inlet manifold on our 1.9JTD GT as it often takes a few churns to get started, so I reckon it needs all the carbon clearing out, and ideally the cylinder head cleaning too. Meanwhile the GT continues to distract me with other problems that need the attention of my wallet - increasingly squeaky suspension - must get round to re-bushing it, but today's little find is a leaking oil cooler - I gather they are prone to corrosion and eventually leaking as they were not well protected from corrosion. Have just ordered the AutoLusso kit as it's half the price of the standard cooler and pipes. Ho Humm....

I can vouch for the benefits of inlet manifold attention.

My eldests, Josh, 159 2.4 20v JTD has had some issues, all of them down to the emission control devices, and his inlet manifold was disgusting, largely down to the EGR of course :x

it might not look too bad, and i've seen worse, but just what i scraped out came up to 500ml in a measuring jug i collected it in, and then i used mr muscle oven cleaner to remove 90% of the rest.

finally, i media blasted the rest off and smooth sanded the internal surfaces, and its now better than new.

i was tempted to weld up the swirl flap and egr holes and eliminate them altoghter, but the jurys still out on that direction for the time being as the car is soon for sale.

I spent most of last weekend cleaning out the inlet manifold on youngest daughter's Freelander Td4 (done 203K) was pretty mucky, but not so bad considering the mileage - it too has become a bit of a pain to start, the clean improved things a bit, but I'm wondering about removing the head and giving it a full de-coke and re-seating the valves as I'm thinking there might be a bit of compression loss which might be the cause of starting problems - once going it's fine.

I wish getting the GT inlet off was as easy as the Freeloader, then I would love to get it looking at good as that manifold Shrew. I have cleaned the GT EGR and the sensor mounted on the inlet which was pretty clagged, just cleaning that improved fuel consumption a few mpg.

However, my next job on the GT is replacing the Oil cooler as I spotted some drips and looking underneath showed what looks like a corrosion induced hole somewhere. I have ordered the AutoLusso replacement kit - at £280, about half the price of genuine parts - so that will be my job for Easter weekend!

these cars are now at an age where the steel oil cooler components are old enough to corrode through, the prospect of a major leak would be disastrous!

Spent the day working on the GT changing the rotten and leaking oil cooler. I went for the Autolusso kit as it was half the price of genuine parts. Some bits were a bit fiddly, notably the bracket which does not pick up on the mount holes of the original so needs some fettling to fit - overall reasonably straight forward though the guide on their site would benefit from some more detail - such as spanner sizes for the unions and oil filter housing as I found I did not have quite large enough spanners for some bits so had to get creative with Stilsons which was not ideal. Some pictures in case any of you consider doing it.

Cheers Ian

All part of the Autolusso kit which all felt good quality. The AL guys were helpful by email with extra photos for some bits their website didn't show. This cooler is wider and shallower than the original so the pipes don't hang down as much as before. My GT seems to have lost its undertray at some point in its' past which makes access a bit easier, bit also means its exposed to more crud too potentially.

So far no signs of leaks so all good :-)

Hi chaps
Well guess what happened to my gt oil cooler today ...... Yep it let go . I've done a round trip of about 100 miles . I stop to go see my wife as is picked up the same bmx I had in 84 . But she was busy . On firing up the engine it said oil low . As I drove off I saw a puddle of oil . Great! so crept home and had a look to see oil all over the inner wheel arch . Haven't looked to much as to what's gone . But I'm guessing one of the joints has gone. Just turned 54000 miles today too on 57 plate .
So I think I will be looking for a cooler kit :(

Oh bugger!!
Hope no damage was done.
I am getting worried about my 156 now. I know it's history, never been replaced and just clocked 105 k.
At least you know of an option. I was very pleased with the service I got from Autolusso. :D

I expect to be selling our GT soon in favour of a new Mito, which I will get to use as the daily driver :D and the Mrs will have to put up with the trusty Skoda.

I am waiting to see what they offer me in part ex and when they could supply the Mito (some suggestion Alfa are holding back new orders until September when they release the facelifted version) but if anyone here was interested I'd perhaps consider offers.

Cheers Ian

After much phaffing about, I finally got news today that I will be able to take delivery of one of the last pre facelift Mito QVLine 1.6JTDMs - very pleased as I'm not particularly impressed with the mild face-lifted version which will no doubt command a price hike, so will be saying goodbye to the GT in a couple of weeks time.....

me too, or is that mi to!

I have really liked the GT, though regular occurrence of small and sometime large niggles detract a little, and the increasing noise from the suspension suggests it will need re-bushing so am pleased I won't be having to do that job!
