the remaining surfcae rust around the boot opening was blasted and ground back to bare then some rust killer put all over any lingering dimples. all solid so that should hold up for a good few years to come.

Re: Kev's workshop projects

didn't post an update up as richard was due to see the fulvia in the flesh for the first time last weekend, didn't want to spoil the surprise and have him see what it looked like before arriving!

front end was finished off and etch primed everywhere last weekend. all the little corners were cleaned out and treated as needed so happy to say forward of the screen it's all about ready for the primer proper

the roof i'd not actually started much on until last weekend, mainly it'd been used to store stuff that i took off

the gutter stainless trim was held on by 4 tiny screws on each side which thankfully revealed hardly any issues at all. just a little bit of work to the n/s rail near the B pillar area.

this afternoon i finished off all the repairs and etch primed the whole thing. it had half a dozen or so little chips to the paint that had let rust creep in but nothing that couldn't be simply sanded out

finally we are getting to the point where the majority of the car is in etch primer, just the rear doors to do (which are pretty solid) and the rear arches and door shuts to sort then it can move on to the next stage, full primer.
after all the hard work i'm finally at the best bit, getting some paint on.

not as many as i'd like mate, done around 160 hours so far from the very beginning of getting the car here. so 4 standard working weeks you could say. stripping, welding, repairing and the paint prep stage.

a corner feels like it's been reached at last, the shell is now in etch primer all over!
ok, the rear doors and bonnet ahven't really been touched yet but they won't need much prep.
this saturday afternoon the aim is to get a few good layers of the proper primer on which i've used before at the VW place, it goes on well with a great depth to it which allows it to be flatted back good and smooth.

won't be that long before some colour goes on.....

had planned on getting some primer on this afternoon but as usual, things didn't go to plan.

a busier schedule than i'd anticipated and the realisation that i hadn't prepped the front inner wings under the wheel arches meant that priming just some of the bits seemed pointless.

so first off the areas were ground back to bare where needed then i etch primed.

had to pop over to louth so that gave it an hour or so to dry out and get the solvents evaporated off

masked out the arches to make sure there wasn't any nasty platters, also masked into the engine bay too which turned out to have been a good idea as loads of overspray was caught

all given a good couple of layers of stoneguard now which will get primed over then painted in body colour.

good weather in mid week and no more hiccups should see the car in proper primer at last...

long afternoon turned into longer evening, but the need to get some primer on before the autumn takes hold meant i had to press on.

a few little areas to tidy up then remove the remaining fixtures from the doorways and scotch them ready to accept the primer.

bit more masking up, clean everything down again, then begin the long process of putting a couple of good layers of the high build filler primer which covers really well and allows enough depth to flat it off before the paint

this painting malarky takes an age with the prep work, the spraying is the fun bit at the end of all the hassle

Top work as ever. Looks great.

Look forward to seeing it finished, original colour going back on?

The Alfa 1970's acid green might suit it, or a silver/grey.

Hi Kev. looks very good. Glad it is going back to blue, very suitable in my eyes.

Are the high fill primers one of the main reasons why modern paint jobs look so much smarter or is it more the top coats?

When you wander around an auction a car with its original paint looks so different to restored stuff.

think the difference is more down to the paint itself rather than the prep underneath although it does make a big difference to the finish to have a primer on there that can be flatted back to a very smooth finish.
old cellulose paint tends to look good once it's on and polished but starts fading pretty quickly, the modern stuff retains its finish for much much longer.

sure JB and kieth will know more about it, i'm still very much the amateur when it comes to paint.

Hi chaps
2 k paints are harder wearing . But they still need good prep tho! I do like the stuff . But I have seen a lot of yee HAR paints job  most body shops put the bare minimum on. So you can't polish it Without going through it

Cars looking great . You can't been high build primer. Great stuff too 8-)

plan for the afternoon was to get the doors out on the mounts, final prep them then primer the whole doors inc underside and shuts, made easy by being on the frames which allow them to be tilted

an unfortunate case of flu has made me wimp out and finish early before i could do the bootlid and start prep on the rear doors and bonnet like i'd planned. just feel like crap, tired and bunged up, and for wimping out when the weather was perfect for painting :(

block sanded the shell this afternoon, no midweek visit this week

simple enough task, a flat block, pack of 320 discs and plenty of elbow grease.

method is to rub down until the black disappears which means that it's all perfectly flat.

does end up with a lot of dust from this filler primer though but is mega easy stuff to work with

aftrenoon off work so what to do...

bonnet needs stripping as i've not touched it yet so set to and stripped all the bits & bobs off it.
then figured i'd have to start sanding it all down making a dusty mess, raining outside so had to keep doors closed and couldn't think of going outside to sand it

so the car had to be covered to stop dust going into places i didn't want it.
which got me thinking, as i plan on painting the engine bay first and then the bodyshell after to stop the inevitable leaning on a wet wing whilst reaching in with the spray gun i may as well mask out the complete car and paint the engine bay out

once the gas heater had been going a while it was toasty in there so with the car masked up save for the wheel arches and engine bay it was finally time to put some colour on.

a few good coats later and it was all done. when the car is painted i'll mask out the engine bay to prevent overspray going onto the painted bits.

funnily enough i've ordered a roll today JB from the place i buy the paint from, so i can cover the car up after it's painted so i can paint the other panels in safety.

we used it at the vw place but i was reluctnt to buy a 150M roll to do one car but then it probably won't be one car.....
