Re: Christmas 2021

Yes, I received notification from Brooklands earlier this week. They are having trouble keeping the gates open at the moment due to staff and volunteer shortage so I can't say I am surprised. From a personal point of view the postponement was timely, as living in my cosy 1970s world the smartphone h...

The actual system will have solar panels feeding a bank of leisure battery’s. These wIll supply an Invertor. To power the basics in the house. The Lister will be used to drive a 140 AH alternator just to top the batteries up when the sun doesn’t shine . Still doing basic testing and proof of concep...

Re: Super Unleaded Availability

Well, today I went over to Sean's to return the favour and help sort out his old Citroen AX (won't start, some sort of ECU issue). Driving past Ramshill Esso station I noted that super unleaded is back on tap! So I went around the one-way system so I could join the queue of cars trying to fill up. I...

Re: Super Unleaded Availability

Well, I see the national news has just acknowledged that there is a problem, although it has taken a shortage of E10 at the pumps to make the headlines. Lack of delivery drivers :( Apparently BP and Esso have been hardest hit, which just happen to be the two suppliers local to me. And what does the ...

Green Machine Front Damper Replacement

Some of you with long memories will remember that I changed my old SPAX rear dampers for AVO double-adjustables back in 2016. You may also remember that the replacement was not straightforward, with the SPAX dampers being pin mount and the AVO using spherical bearings top and bottom, which meant wel...

Ditto with my fuel hose, replaced about 3 years ago when I upgraded the fuel pipe from 6mm to 8mm throughout. It is only a short run from the main copper pipe to the fuel pressure regulator, but it split at the regulator union and the first I knew about it was a whiff of fresh petrol when I closed t...

Haynes gives the Bosch electronic dissy as JGFUD 4.

Mine is stamped with that on the side.
Ditto for me - and the points distributor is the Bosch JFUD-4, I have an example of both. Same unit is used on the VW Beetle and in 6-cylinder form, Porsche 911

Super Unleaded Availability

Hi everyone - I thought it was just a local issue last week when I tried to find a petrol station that wasn't trying to push E10 unleaded on an unsuspecting public, but today I had exactly the same problem - no super unleaded, anywhere! My fuel gauge is on zero, which means I have a little bit in re...

I hope so to Kev. I went out for fuel this morning only to find every single Super Unleaded pump out of service and only the infernal E10 Unleaded available everywhere else. I hope things get better before they get worse, I'm running on fumes at the moment  I still can't see the majority of mot...

Re: Motor Mystery...

Compression ratio is swept volume against clearance volume isn't it? I've never thought of it as 15 psi atmospheric/ 150 psi compression means we have 10:1. Does it work like that? For a cheeky quick way of doing it, an it's actually how alfa/fiat did it as early as the 90's with the examiner, you ...

It does tend to make the case for NOT fitting an expensive radio in any Alfa they’re s nothing that can come out of the speakers that sounds better than the engine. Atmospheric pressure is 14.8 psi ish, therefore you have 10:1 compression - ish, which is pretty good !
Cheers, John.
Thanks John - that's good enough for me :D

Re: Motor Mystery...

Good news and bad news really? Four even compressions is good. Under 150 psi , not so good? Have you tried another compression tester, to confirm yours is ok? Indeed - compression tester is brand new, but you are right, the absolute pressure reading could be off. That said, I was more interested in...

Re: Motor Mystery...

So I think I have finally solved the mystery of the low compression on the LH cylinder bank. I checked the valve clearances as you know and found that the inlet and exhaust clearance on the LH bank were all too small by 0.05mm. I made up an adjustment tool as per your advice and readjusted all the v...

It's amazing what they did with the engine position to shift the mass down and back. Still a transverse 4-cylinder though, not like DTM (V8 RWD Opel Astra anyone?).

Still prefer the old skool Tricentrol super-saloons, like Big Bertha, Baby Bertha and Mega Bertha... Silhouette racing :D

Lancia Track Day Goodwood

A surprisingly busy event this year, for obvious reasons I suspect, but there was such a diverse range of non-Lancias in the pits and on track that some people weren't even sure what event it was! I met up with my friend Sean who was replacing a wheel bearing on a Fiat Punto and we decided to convoy...

Re: Alfasud Adjustable Tappets

Just looking back on your "Motor Mystery" thread........maybe redo the compression test once all is settled in? Yes, I will do that. The valve clearances will certainly have affected the cylinder compression. I can't believe that a 0.05mm adjustment to both inlet and exhaust would be enough to brin...

A bit of an update on this thread. So following the sage advice from this forum (many thanks guys) I made up an adjustment tool out of a spare Allan key and a strip of 2mm steel plate. To start with it looked just like the factory tool shown in the factory manuals. Once the rear bulkhead panel and t...
