Re: The Puzzle Post!

Yes a Rochdale Olympic.....but a Phase 1 with the aerodynamic underside. The Phase 2 I'm working on was opened up underneath to allow engine/gearbox/prop/axle to be dropped out. The Phase 1 is therefore stiffer, and handles better.....not bad for an early 60's design. Yeah, I can imagine, must be s...

Fibreglass monocoque so it's got to be a Lotus or Rochdale by the shape... Changed my mind, Rochdale Olympic? Doesn't look like the most sensible way to roll a delicate fibreglass structure to me.

BTW I loved the Gilburn Invader higher up the page, always fancied one of those :)

Re: Comparing Busso internals - 75 12v vs 916 GTA 24v

I managed to crock myself a month and a bit ago stupidly trying to lift a transaxle out of my car without an engine hoist (did some damage internally somehow, not a bad back!) so I haven't been able to do anything with the engine proper, but I have sold most of the 3.0 24v bits now, except the cam c...

Didn't sell so presumably didn't reach the reserve. Wonder why people put cars on Ebay with a reserve? Buyers always expect the reserve to be unrealistically high so don't bid, whereas if the car was put on with the reserve as the starting price it might well sell (as long as it's not silly) and it'...

Think it's more lack of space / money than lack of desire in most peoples' cases - I used to have posters of a Beta HPE and a BMW 3.0 CSL on my wall (bigger than the pics of slightly suspect pop stars which accompanied them) as a teenager and I've never owned one so it'd have been coming home with m...

It'll be a fine looking car when it's restored to it's original colour, it even looks quite good in the baby blue it's currently sprayed. Of course everyone on here is going to say "keep it", but I know that feeling of having a car sitting in the garage waiting for you to spend even 5 minutes on it ...

166 is a darned fine car IMO, especially in 2.0 v6 turbo and 3.0 v6 form - far better engineered than the 156. Slightly more rust resistant too, though they do have their own share of rust issues. And though I'm not a big fan of the pre-facelift's front-end looks, the facelift models were definitely...

I think Clarkson has a lot to answer for when it comes to this kind of rubbish - though Top Gear was entertaining (esp when it came to crushing Marinas with pianos) it did start out a trend, e.g. Fifth gear trying to ape Top Gear by proving an immaculate Mercedes W124 saloon wasn't bomb proof, by pu...

...And another little update, I saw a front crankcase cover brand new on Ebay for £20 for the later 24v, so thought I might as well get it so I could compare the old vs new covers, and this well and truly explains where the idea the 116-style sump won't fit on a 24v without drilling new bolt holes c...

Very true, the pre-facelift VW Type 3 looked pretty similar from the front too. That's a nice, easy one - BMW 700; I've always thought they look a bit like an Amphicar styling-wise.

And the final one in the series - 2.5 24v crankshaft with 3.0 pistons and rods. Should be no issue at all since the conrods are the same length and sure enough, it isn't 3.0 crankshaft https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/923/ympe70.jpg https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/923/6AJ6...

Re: Engine rebuild help - opinions needed!

Turns out the cavitation holes I was worried about are present on the nearly-new 24v block too. Judging by the way the tiny bit of water I put in the holes doesn't go anywhere it appears the holes don't do anything, so they must just be from when the block was cast: https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v...

Quick update and more proof the internals are very similar - with the correct front cover the 12v crank fits fine: https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/921/cpPXVC.jpg As does the sump pan: https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/wtQpDY.jpg https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x48...

Thanks Lou, could be interesting to see :) I reckon just fitting an extractor at the lowest part of the sump followed by a remote filter, cooler and single stage external pump feeding back through the normal oil filter fitting would do it, but even the cheapest external single stage pump is about £5...

Alternatively Marc you could always go dry sump . It isn’t too hard to convert and it would solve all your sump and pump problems . Lou I was thinking about that, but for a road car it wouldn't really be practical; there wouldn't be enough room for the oil reservoir in the engine compartment and yo...

Comparing Busso internals - 75 12v vs 916 GTA 24v

Another day, another speculative Ebay purchase. I found a cheap 916 gtv Busso block on Ebay, minus it's sump, conrods, crankshaft, liners, etc. The chrome trumpets looked in pretty good condition (except for one small dent) and I thought I could do a quick comparison between the 12v and 24v blocks b...
