Re: Escort Hunter Killer
Hi Keith,
My Golf back this week, Malcolm’s golf will have the engine brought back to similar spec and Duncan is having an engine built now to a slightly higher spec.
So three capable machines for 2020!

Re: Escort Hunter Killer
Getting fresh air to the Golf carbs at the rear of the engine bay is a challenge so JMR have been busy modifying the bulkhead. I am sure it will sound better as well as breath better!

Re: Harry the Seal
Well that is an interesting video. You can see that the Dolomite has more power than the RS2000 as he plants the throttle on the straights. Its a bit worrying how much he is having to wrestle with the steering though! We have seen in the past reliability issues with the Dolomite whereas the Mk1 Esco...

150bhp is very healthy. Are you using high revs to get that?

Re: Escort Hunter Killer
Hi Tim, That’s great you will be going to Cadwell. I look forward to seeing you there. They ran the engine under a light load at about 3500rpm for 15min first. Then they loaded the engine up in 500rpm intervals from 3000rpm up to 7500rpm. They changed the main jets a couple of times to get the fuel ...

Re: Escort Hunter Killer
Hi Guys My last race at Brands was pretty miserable as the cars behind me on the grid all passed me one by one. The car was down on power and popping and banging. The engine is out and stripped. The reason it was down on power was because the cam timing was out. The crankshaft pulley had loosened an...

Re: Escort Hunter Killer
Hi Keith, Always good to see you. The next race is Castle Combe on 6/7July. We are having a shake down on a track day on Friday 5th July. This is one of the dyno runs to 7500: https://youtu.be/dlMAkPxZr9g It was fascinating to see that it ran like a pig at first. At idle it was popping and banging u...

Re: Escort Hunter Killer
Hi Keith, I think the car is going to be very capable. Steel flywheel and racing clutch being fitted next. Then the refurbished gearbox with bespoke ratios, selected final drive and gripper LSD. Maniflow full exhaust system and Tyres will be Yokohama AO52. No excuses for the driver now! Brgds, Simon

In the mean time plotting the new engine performance figures from the test-bed onto the old engine performance figures chart from the rolling road...

Re: Escort Hunter Killer
Good point Keith. It must produce quite a bit of drag with all that surface area on the buckets but the engines built by JMR are built to be reliable and run for many seasons. They don’t use massively high revs - max about 8300. Ordinarily 7500.

Re: Escort Hunter Killer
Thanks Keith. I will let you know what it produces.
I am told that the manifold only increases the top end power by a couple of HP but has a significant positive effect on mid range torque.
I think you should definitely do Caldwell Tim. It’s such a great track!

Re: Harry the Seal
Thanks guys. I have the letters that the original owner sent to the Leyland Performance Department and to Broadspeed with attached lists of all the performance parts that were purchased. I also have a lot of the new parts that were removed. Seats, intake manifold, original carbs etc etc.

Re: Harry the Seal
Hi Tim, If I meet the Goodwood rules I am sure it would be considered for the Gerry Marshall Trophy Race. It does need to be quick enough though. Both car and drivers! The standards for both are very high there. It seems that if you get the engine properly sorted then ordinarily you might want to re...

Harry the Seal
Dolomite Sprint bought new in 1976 (UK tax disc from Aug 76), shipped to Sweden and converted to a Group 1 racing car. The car was sponsored by Silja Lines so has Harry the Seal on both the rear wings. Harry has been updated a little from his image on the car. He looks a bit more smug these days: SI...

Spot on Neg. The head on this car is a Broadspeed one. Wills rings are used for head/gasket/block sealing. I was told that the head studs/bolts have to be replaced with ARP quality. The water pump is updated and modified. The spark plug tubes still leak oil unless sealed inside and having a billet c...

Re: Escort Hunter Killer
Hi Guys, I am told: 1. The std crank vibrates at high rpm (8000) and can destroy the block. You need a newly designed crank with different balancing and a vibration damper. 2. The block needs a bracing skirt. 3. Rockers can break. 4. The clamping of the head with some angular studs is not good. Othe...

They sure are racing the 16V SOHC Dolomite Sprint and a well sorted one can push out 250bhp at 7000rpm!
In fact, I have bought one tonight.

Re: Escort Hunter Killer
I can’t wait Keith. I feel sure that a 185/190 HP Golf will get me in the mix with the front pack. Then you have the fun of learning how to be quicker and improving race craft in general. We will still have a 10-30hp deficit on a Pinto Escort and a 60hp deficit on a well tuned Dolomite. But the Dolo...
