Re: Not an Alfa (weirdly)

Marc Apart from a few brackets The chassis is basically identical to the frogeye and you can actually get a fibreglass “frogeye kit” to transform your midget into a frogeye. Heh, I did wonder about that. Just goes to show how much a 'facelift' can change the appearance of a car - the later spridget...

Now here's an interesting something...

I was messing about with a spare Subaru engine and found something interesting, though not terribly useful to me (it's Busso or Bust for me). Below shows a picture of a Subaru 3.0 H6 24v engine. So what. But look closely at what's attached to the crankshaft - an Alfetta / 75 flywheel; it bolts strai...

Looks very nice, though it's a bit worrying they tried to start it without checking it further after 8 years standing, poor old engine!

Re: Transaxle Forensics

Got the diffs out - the 'old' transaxle has 41/10 on the diff (4.1), which is open (unfortunately). Since it's isostatic that puts it as a late 2.5, either gtv6 or 75. Unless the diff has been changed too of course... 'new' one is 43x10 open which identifies it as a 4.3 ratio, probably from a 2.0 4 ...

I'm sure I've seen that one advertised somewhere before (possibly not in the UK) - the state of those rear seats looks very familiar.

Transaxle Forensics

I was planning to do this as another 'comparing' thread, but it's turning more into a detective thriller, with lots of twists and turns... As a followup to my fiddling about with the 12v Busso, I'm now starting work on a pair of transaxles I've got hold of, with the intention of making one really go...

Lookin' good :)

Obvious I guess and no doubt you've already checked, but worth checking the baffling in the sump's sufficient since it's no doubt handling considerably higher cornering forces than it normally would?

Ok, some more opinions needed please :D Just got a brand new set of Alfa rods delivered for my 2.8 12v Busso ongoing project (no car for it yet of course!) so I couldn't resist unwrapping one of the Wossner pistons just to see how it looked on a brand new rod: Mmm, nice! https://imagizer.imageshack....

Lovely looking thing, but because of the colour (similar to WRX blue) I immediately thought "mmm, I'd love to fit a Subaru 4wd system and turbo to it"...

Sounds like it's worth a quick check of the PCV system to me, both issues could be crankcase pressure related.

Head number 1 (for pistons 1-3, and with the oil pump drive) is much more pitted and rotted than the other head (you can see the state of it in the bottom left of this pic): https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/923/RM1uwu.jpg It's just about useable since the pitting doesn't extend into the...

Re: Engine rebuild help - opinions needed!

Underneath all the muck the heads aren't in bad condition - no signs of damage to the seats and I can't detect any wear in the guides yet, so this must have been one heck of a nice engine before it was laid up. However there is some cavitation on the underside of the heads where corrosion had been e...

Never mind, found out for myself, they are the mythical QV tensioner and appear to be working fine. Since they appear to be extremely expensive / hard to find (I'd be more than happy to be told otherwise) maybe this is a bargain price? Roughly 1/2 the price of the last one I found sold anywhere... h...

Is this a 164 3.0 24v cambelt tensioner?

I found a couple of these in the bottom of a parts box. I think they're the tensioners for the early 3.0 24v used in the 164, but I'm not 100% sure. Anyone know for sure if these are 164 tensioners? And if so, how do I test if they still work OK? Both seem to spin freely but I can't work out any oth...

Re: Comparing Busso internals - 75 12v vs 916 GTA 24v

I've given the 2.5 block a quick cleanup and lightly glaze busted the bores to see how bad the rust really was, and it's not too bad over all. I haven't checked the rods for straightness or crankshaft for ovality, but it turns nice and freely now the surface rust is out of the way. Realistically the...

Re: Comparing Busso internals - 75 12v vs 916 GTA 24v

So in summary... 164 3.0 12v -> 75 3.0 12v (and vice versa) Almost everything will swap over, including the pump / distributor / sump with no issues as long as you have a donor engine with the correct flywheel, ancillaries, etc Alfetta (or 75?) 2.5 12v -> 164 3.0 12v (and vice versa) Ditto. But you'...

Well, that was more interesting than I thought - the 2.5 'long' crankshaft fits straight into the 3.0 12v block with no adaptations wahtsoever, even the bearing caps fit straight off! And the 2.5 gtv flywheel fits straight on, as does either the gtv, 75 or 164 crank pulley https://imagizer.imageshac...

Re: Comparing Busso internals - 75 12v vs 916 GTA 24v

Time for more comparisons... I picked up a 2.5 12v engine which is either from a gtv6 or a 75 2.5; by the looks of the serial number and long crankshaft the former is more likely, though it does have loosely bolted on 75 ancillaries which I plan to transfer to my 3.0 12v project. Pulley bolt came of...

Nice looking cars IMO, interesting there are so few 'haters' on that thread except seemingly for people who have never owned Alfas. Interesting everyone's saying the 24v is stronger than the 12v though, think they're getting mixed up with the later 916-on 24v with the oil pump in the sump. I'd have ...
