Re: Compomotive MS 1380 Wheels, refurb, engineering, and use

Little guy seems to be on the mend, thanks Shrew. Still not well, but home and resting. Just watched that add, never seen it...'six appeal', love it, but would New Zealanders get it?! And I'm quite partial to a cigar...might have to get a sticker made up for rear windscreen. As for wheels, I'm ready...

Re: Compomotive MS 1380 Wheels, refurb, engineering, and use

I do indeed. Sorry for the short reply, my boy has been in hospital for past two days so I've been distracted. Yes, post them out :-). Should be able to ship to Perth Western Australia easy enough, I had a much larger package shipped from Germany with relative ease. Main thing I guess is to wrap the...

Gees, I've been working too hard, missed all this! Looking good Shrew, going to be really special. Interesting about the profile change, I did not spot that either. You are right, these wheels are destined for my Fiat 1283P but of course are interchangeable with my Sud. I am sure they will be slippe...

Re: Alfasud 1.5 Ti QV tidy up

Now I'm back from my overseas adventures I have found some time to tackle the next things that we're bugging me. The original fan shroud was rusty and bent so I yanked it out, sandblasted it, straightened it and repainted it. The dash was cracked to buggery (I guess West Australian 40 deg days are n...

I thought the real physics side of it would be useful, but put it simpler for folks like me who just like wheels! Ha ha!
Erm yes...sorry...nerd alert! I'll shut up now. Just finish the wheels already haha!

Re: Compomotive MS 1380 Wheels, refurb, engineering, and use

Shrew, Outstanding work so far, I knew you were the right man to make my crazy wheel needs a reality! I'm glued to this thread now. So a point of clarification in relation to the method of clamping the wheel to the hub. My understanding is that we use an insert in the wheel to give the correct spigo...

Re: Alfasud 1.5 Ti QV tidy up

Thanks all. Yes the colour is factory alfa I think. I messed with the image but when I loaded it up and it was further compressed the colours got a little screwy. Fan now overhauled, sandblasted and ready for reinstall. Could not stand that rusty thing staring at me every time I popped the bonnet! H...

Yeah I think it's reasonable...by no means perfect, but sound enough and nothing terminal from what I can tell...just neglected. The last set of photos represent a fair amount of effort on my part, with a lot more to come.

Now if I could just find ruddy badges!!

haha, yes I have checked the cambelts. I replaced them, pump looked good, so have left that till next time. Checked timing several times before turning by hand and convincing myself I was not about to stuff a good motor! A few more pics of progress. By no means to the standard of some of the project...

Alfasud 1.5 Ti QV tidy up

Not really a resto...yet. More of a tidy up and register, then chew over where to next. The car is stock, bar the steering wheel. It needs some attention in the drivers front light as it looks to have been repaired poorly, with some missalignment of light frame. The car is not perfect, but it is pre...

Re: Turbo / Supercharging - Considerations

Golf mark 4 ko3, ko3s and ko4 are are also good options. You could high flow the to3 with to4 internals as an upgrade. Those turbos must be 50 quid at a wrecker by now. The trick as always will be getting one that is not flogged out. Try to avoid the temptation of chinese turbos, a mate of mine in a...

Re: Turbo / Supercharging - Considerations

Without a flow chart it is hard to say. Indirectly you can make an assesment based on what it is strapped to. I also could not find a flow chart for it. I was thinking something like the CA18 Nissan turbo engine might be an option. They are old now though so most if not all are probably stuffed. Per...

Re: Turbo / Supercharging - Considerations

Shrew, I had a look at your setup. Target: 200Hp@engine Stock max rpm: 5500 stock compression: 9.5:1 correct? Allowable boost: 8psi (on 9.5:1 gives static compression ratio of approx 11.7:1 when boosted) A factory MY97-98 WRX makes 155KW (aprox 208Hp)@engine at 5600 with 1994cc, almost 300cc more th...

Re: Turbo / Supercharging - Considerations

Can anyone supply a dyno chart for their non turbo 16valve setup? I would like to calibrate my model to the engine's efficiency, If I can get a curve showing rpm and power/torque I can do this. If you have a turbo map, even better. Just have to let me know if it is wheel or engine power, and I would...

Re: Turbo / Supercharging - Considerations

so you'd be an advocate for either a smaller spool happy turbo, or supercharging instead altogether, i get that. Not quite. I totally agree with your comment regarding leaving headroom for more Hp. I also get the need to maximise affect for the dollars spent. Here's the rub, you want to get the car...

Re: Turbo / Supercharging - Considerations

Fair enough, but you are bulding a compromise into your system, you have to remember that your engine has less gas flow that a subaru, you only hvae 1.7 liters. This wil reuslt in more lag for the same turbo. How thick are the liners on the Alfa 1.7 16v boxerwith stock pistons? Assume they are cast ...

Re: Turbo / Supercharging - Considerations

Cool Shrew, I think your sugegstion would net a good end result. I will work through your scenario with turbo and a supercharger comparison. With such low Hp target, I feel supercharging would be a better solution...same top power, more bottom end. Is that engine 200hp or wheel? I could get technica...

Just describe what you can Shrew.

Target Hp
Car model / weight
Use of car.
Prefered method of boosting, and why.

Thats more than enough.

Cool, always hard to know how much to break things down, some people will not want to know the detail, and for some it might be too much? It's all about the concepts, if you absorbe the concepts you have the tools to make your own choices and tweaks to your mods. As for your turbo scenario, Give me ...

Re: Turbo / Supercharging - Considerations

So a domed piston will give more force on the crank due to it's larger area. You would think so (this question tripped me up once). It is true that the area on which the pressure acts is larger than a flat top piston. BUT....remember how I said that pressure acts 'normal' to the surface? Did I expl...
